IU Prospective Student Concerns

Hi all, I have been heavily considering IU at Kelley amongst other big10 business programs. I am a direct admit at Kelley with some merit aid and the Hudson and Holland scholarship and I would like to ask what your opinions were regarding a few concerns I had about the school. My overall opinion on the school is extremely positive, specifically regarding the Business program and course material, I just wanted to hear takes on a few negatives.

  1. Does the lack of an integrated city presence hurt opportunities for networking and social opportunities in junior/senior year (living off-campus, bars)?

  2. For someone who loves to party but doesn’t want to join a frat, is the Greek scene overbearing and necessary for this kind of lifestyle?

  3. Is football/basketball underwhelming? (Big football/basketball fan, also considering OSU, Mich)

  4. Are the students outside of Kelley unmotivated/party-driven? I like to learn amongst an intellectual and academically driven student body.

ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED, THANK YOU!

I am a sophomore at IU Kelley and I can tell you that IU has a fine social life, I am not in greek life and I can easily find things to do nearly every day of the weekend if not the week as well, it’s all about how you socialize. In terms of not being in a city its just a different feel than the other two schools, Kelley does an incredible job of bringing in companies so I don’t think there’s a disadvantage of being in a smaller area at all. There are also many major cities within four hours if you feel the need to go away for a weekend.

Greek life isn’t overbearing IU is trying to shut it down honestly.

Football games are mostly about the tailgates but last year brought a lot of excitement around the team. Basketball games are packed to the gills, this year we were good next year we’re supposed to be really good so expect it to get better.

In terms of kids not being in Kelley I had the same thought going into IU which I realized if a very unfair assumption. If you go to IU the worst thing you can do is only surround yourself with Kelley kids. One of the best things about IU is how diverse the student body is and meeting kids with different backgrounds and different interests. Many of my best friends aren’t in Kelley and its a great break from all the stress within. You’ll also see that a lot of Kelley kids are the biggest partiers you’ll ever meet, theres just as many unmotivated kids in a nationally recognized program as there is in any other program.

@yankeespackers47 What are some benefits for being a DA to Kelley other than you don’t have to stress a lot about trying to get in to the business school? I’m considering IU and UGA but not sure which one is a better fit for me since they got their ups and downs.

We just visited, as S20 is an Kelley direct admit and we wanted to see the school. We were lucky to visit before the virus in early March. We went to a basketball game, which was anything but underwhelming. Sold out crowd, tons of spirit, the whole town was excited for game day.

@yankeespackers47 Thanks for such a detailed response! That all sounds great

Awesome! Can’t wait for the basketball
