IU Questions Help!!!

I was silly and waited until now to think about this and I have to decide if I will attend IU soon. I am currently a senior, and I have some questions hopefully people can answer. Thanks.

  1. I am from the Northeast and would be an out of state student at IU. Are the students friendly and welcoming, and do people look to make new friends not just stay with high school ones? Is it easy for new students who know nobody to make friends?
  2. I am very interested in joining a fraternity, but I have no idea how the rush process works. Do certain fraternities take more out of state kids than others, and which fraternities are more stereotypical "party" and "get lots of girls" frats? Do fraternities have open parties/events for you to get to know each of them better?
  3. I haven't even looked into how I would get a roommate or anything like that. Is there a way for me to live in the most social freshmen dorm with a random roommate to try and make friends more quickly? Would that be a good idea?
  4. My high school is tiny and there was basically no dating. What is the dating scene at IU like? I picture a more midwestern like kindness, and nicer girls than I know from the northeast. Is this true? Are girls at IU really friendly, pretty, and the kind you take home to meet your parents or am I off on that?
  5. Last question sorry! I know IU has been listed as a party school before. How much partying actually happens, and are the parties open to everyone? If I decide not to join a fraternity until spring could I still get into parties as a freshmen guy?

Sorry for the questions!!! I am a little stressed right now because I have to make a decision soon, and I am still weighing several options but am very high on IU.

So wait, you are a Patriot Fan and you want to come to Colts country? Okay, all kidding aside, what is the draw of IU for you that you are willing to pay OOS tuition?

In general, IU does seem to draw a lot of kids from Indianapolis area and the Chicago area but during our tours I was amazed at how many West Coast people were in our tour groups. I think there is a pretty good mix of kids that go to IU. The people we have met so far have been pretty friendly and I would say you should be able to meet people. In general, if you are in your dorm, leave the door open and I’m sure you’ll meet others.

My daughter used the Schools App to find her roommate. She decided not to just go with someone from her High School, even though her best friend is also going to IU. They both are going with roommates from OOS. For the housing app, you don’t specify a dorm. You put down the neighborhood, however I think there was a comment section that you can add a dorm preference but since the housing app has been open since February you may be running out of options.

Sorry, can’t answer your other questions but you may also want to check out the Blog WeareIU, there seems to be some good information there from current and past students about rush, dorms, etc.

IU is a very large school, I don’t think you can make vast generalizations. You will most likely find a wide variety of groups and people.
