IU to tighten admits

Might not be the ultimate great safety much longer.

"IU's new admissions policy seeks more `quality' students

Associated Press

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Aiming to catch up with its Big Ten peers, Indiana University is considering a plan to enroll more "quality" students with high SAT scores.

IU would strive over the next five years to enroll more students with high SAT scores under the admissions plan presented Friday to the IU trustees' academic affairs committee.

According to the most recent U.S. News & World Report higher education rankings, IU's freshmen SAT test scores were last in Big Ten last year.

The plan's goal is to make sure IU keeps up with Big Ten peers Purdue, Michigan State, Ohio State and Iowa in "quality indicators," test scores and high-school class rank.

But that's not good enough for some IU trustees eager to make IU one of the nation's top 30 research universities. They said IU should measure itself against the Big Ten's academic elite.

"What is the student profile of a top research university?" said trustee Tom Reilly. "I think the perception is it's more like Michigan and Wisconsin."

I think they're starting it this year.

Friend got waitlisted with a 2.7 and a 22

I guess this would mean an even suckier football team. At least they are as bad as the Illini!

The locals [Hoosiers] are gonna have a hard time with this. The state ranks low in their quality of achievement and with budget cuts the state schools will be looking for OOS dollars. Ignite the fight btwn the dull with their tax dollars and the OOS folks who can beat them in stats and tuition dollars. I predict a few years of buying in smartees from OOS and then a return to taking instate kids but fewer merit dollars.

Davis=basketball: hope that IU does NOT make the NCAA tourney this year again so that Davis gets a oneway ticket outta Bloomington.

Davis... argh! He's killing that team. I remember when he was coach of the year when the team was in the top 10. Now he's lost 4 of 5. I think Bruce Alford (Iowa) is next in line, next year.

Next in line to coach The Hoosiers or for coach of the year? Why would Alford lower himself to go Bloomington when he has spent so much time building his own program at Iowa? No prestige or money in that scenario to my mind.

Indiana.....the state has glommed onto Davis/Dungy the black duo in coaching......both of them are so hot if you ask me.

Indiana's job is much more prestigious than Iowa's. That's why Alford would leave. It's not really lowering himself, historically, Indiana is one of the best basketball teams out there.

You must be a Hoosier........the history of the team is in the past......tough recruiting and they have low standards. Maybe you have forgotten who trained Alford and where that road led. Also Myles Brand the genius who is now NCAA....hehehe Too much has changed in my opinion. You do espouse the story that many Hoosiers talk about........Bobby's boy coming home to rescue the program.

Another thread gone astray.........Wolves isn't quite a Hoosier.......at least not yet........

LOL, i'm great at hijacking threads!

Coach Davis has the flu.........and the tongues are wagging. This ship is about to take on water. So who else will they get to come to IU that is black? There is more than one problem here. Remember Myles Brand saying that IU is about academics now and not sports. I wonder how the AD sees Davis playing into that cause???

I just hope Bobby's boy comes home. I'm getting sick of the lack of effort and terrible shooting. Vaden has some of the worst cold streaks ever, he can be 4-6 one night, then 1-11 the other. They're getting nothing from anyone but Killingsworth, and even he isn't playing at the level he was earlier in the year. If they don't make the tourney, it's probably the lowest point in 50 years (missing the tourney 2 straight years)

I hear 'ya. What did they think was gonna happen? I mean when they rode Knight outta dodge on a fast train they didn't really hire a coach....they just slotted in Davis. Once they did that they lost all recruiting appeal and the best kids are going elsewhere. Some folks think they can still make the 64......what do you think? I am very skeptical.

I don't think they'll make it. They have games @ Michigan, @ Illinois, @ Penn State, and @ Purdue. They have yet to beat a Big Ten opponent on the road. And then they have MSU at home, that will be a tough game. You add in the Big Ten Tournament (which they won't win), and that's a possibility of 14 losses (they have 8 already).

If they get their collective heads out of their collective a$$es, they can easily beat Penn State and Purdue, as well as a win in the Big Ten tournament, that would put their record at 18-12, which is a definite borderline record. But they do have tough losses against tough competition, as well as some tough wins. 10-12 losses for a Big Ten team may still be good enough.

If they win the Big 10 Tournament they get the automatic bid..........but I don't think that is likely although it does seem up for grabs this week. Illinois did get beat and I think that at this time Illinois is overrated. Too many random losses these last two weeks. As for Purdue that is a toss up and I look for IU to beat them. Penn State is a little more problematic for it is at Happy Valley and there will be a big turnout.

One thing is sure.........a lot of odd schools that don't usually show up big are pushing some of these big 10 schools down in the rankings.

I guess I better get out my "Hoosier Daddy Now?" shirt. On the back it says, "Goodknight, General. The Day IU Basketball Died" and the date he was canned.

Now that is a great comment. The most amusing part of all of this.....while IU ponders the comments made by Davis......ESPN is heavily promoting their new reality show=Knight School <a href="http://www.tv.com/knight-school-with-coach-bobby-knight/show/51121/summary.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.tv.com/knight-school-with-coach-bobby-knight/show/51121/summary.html</a></p>

as I recall The General was NOT a Hoosier or as Davis says "one of their own"

Davis says: <a href="http://www.idsnews.com/news/story.php?id=33955&adid=sports%5B/url%5D">http://www.idsnews.com/news/story.php?id=33955&adid=sports</a></p>

He was a Buckeye.

True but what do they call a Buckeye that did a stint at West Point???
