IUP Nursing School

Hi everybody,

I'm currently studying at a Community College in Pittsburgh, PA. My grades are good, my GPA is 3.73 so i guess is good. I decided to go for nursing. I have applied to Carlow University and right now I'm on the waiting list for the Sophomore year, but until now there are no open spots.
I have also applied to Pitt and I will be taking the TOEFL exam (I'm an immigrant) next week. If I get into Pitt it will only be into the Freshman year because to be accepted into the Sophomore year I need one more chem class and is not being offered at my school right now.

Also, I have applied to Robert Morris and Indiana University of Pennsylvania. I have not gotten an answer from RMU yet, but I believe I will get it this week. Going to IUP seems possible at this moment since they have a few open spots.

I'm wondering how good the school of nursing is there. I know IUP is known for being a "party school". I'm not really into that although it would be nice to have some fun once in a while. My big concern are the academics. Is the Nursing School good? Do you get a lot of practice before graduating and if so, where do you do your practices? Do you practices at hospitals too or just at nursery homes (that is what I have read)? Would you recommend the IUP School of Nursing?

I will be transferring to a university this coming fall.

Thanks everyone for your comments!!!

IUP is a great school for nursing, this past fall, its NCLEX first time pass rate was 99%. IUP is often overlooked because it’s known to be a party school. I don’t drink & there’s MANY people that don’t. Don’t think that if you attend a party school you’ll be pressured to drink. The good thing about IUP is once you’re admitted into the program, you’re admitted; none of that “pre-nursing” process that many other schools put you through. Clinicals start sophomore year. There’s a wide range of experience at the local Indiana hospital, nursing home, the hospital in Pittsburgh, and more. I think IUP gets more hands on experience than many other schools especially since clinical starts so early for IUP students. I recommend it. Pitt is very well known for Nursing, but either way, you’re all getting the same nursing education taking the same exam at the end.

IUP is tier 2. Carlow is also tier 2. Robert Morris is Tier 3. Duquesne and Pitt are tier 1.

For nursing, try to attend a at tier 1 college. Look at Penn State, Temple University etc.
