IVC->UCI or Maryland spring 2011?

Should I go to Irvine Valley College for a year or two and transfer to UCI or should I attend University of Maryland College Park spring 2011?

How much will each cost and can your family afford it?

UCI would be much cheaper than UMaryland. UMaryland would cost at least $40k per year. How much can your parents afford to spend?

Mom2CK, I found on another thread that the OP is from MD, not CA. The cost for UCI would be >$50K while UMD would be less than $25K. Be careful of your assumptions.

OP, going to a UC would cost you a mint. I don’t know why you are considering it. Can your parents afford $50K/year?

Considering the timing and the overall educational experience, Univ. of Md. College Parks Spring 2011 is by far the better option. The one or two years at a CC can’t compare to an equivalent period at a very good State flagship.

Go to IVC for 2 years and then UCI. You would pay out of state tuition at IVC, but it is significantly lower than at the Maryland. After two years you can claim resident status and go to UCI.

BTW I am from Orange County and practically grew up across from UCI so if you have more questions feel free to ask

It’s possible:

You will have to establish yourself as TOTALLY separate from your parents. That means you need to make enough income to pay for your schooling, your rent, food, etc. And they can’t declare you as a dependent.

I imagine it is easy to show a financially independent status at the age of 19 … it would mean the OP would have to show a minimum of $20k earnings while attending JC…
