I've almost given up...=(. Chance me please? Only 3 schools!

hey... so apparently my parents think I'm a failure at life, b/c I suck at school... and b/c my older bro got excellent grades and went to Harvard.

Since I really sucked in high school, I'm setting my sights lower than the Ivy League...but I'm afraid that I might have to set them even lower.
But I need your guys' help with where I can expect to get in/rejected just so I won't have so much stress going into this whole ordeal.

Ok, here are my stats:

GPA: 3.6 (UW), 4.07 (W)
I took the most rigorous courseload possible...with lots of APs
I took AP Bio (5), Chem(5), US History(4), Art History (4), and Stats (5) last year
i'm planning on taking AP Lit, Physics and Calc next year
SAT: CR- 760, M- 690, W-800
ACT: E- 34, M-32, R-36, S- 32. COMPOSITE: 34

I'm interested in going to Business School or maybe even going into Pre-Med.

ECs (not a lot)

Boy Scouts for 6 years, several community service projects and currently a Life Scout
Red Cross for a year and a half
Cross Country for 3 years (2 years JV, 1 year V)
Quiz Bowl Varsity for 3 years
went to Harvard SSP, did a chemistry course and got an A
highest scorer on the American Chemical Society Chemistry test in the school (didnt make it to USAChO though)
went to Duke Young Writers Camp in 2007
went to National Youth Leadership Training camp in 2007... got really inspired, i bet i could write an amazing essay on that experience.

I got 2nd place at the state spelling bee when I was in 7th and 8th grade... i dk if that even counts lol.

side note: I did research at SLU this summer and wrote a 20 page research paper on it...it may win an award... i get to know about it in Sep.
But regardless... it's going to get published...in my name, so that's cool.

I used to be really passionate about pursuing a career in medicine, but after this summer in research I don't feel too great about it. But I will do it if I get lots of money. I love money... and like I said earlier, I'm also weighing the business route equally. I can write about either passionately as long as I know i'm going to get some money out of it.

RECS: I can get some really good ones from my Chem and English teachers... and my essays I'll nail b/c I consider myself a pretty good writer, so just assume my essays will be awesome. Haha. (if you think i sound arrogant please give me some slack...i have nothing else to be proud of lol)

OK So...drum roll...here are the schools I'm interested in...from HIGHEST crapshoot to LOWEST, and so on...

WashU in STL
Tufts U
University of Michigan-Ann Arbor
University of Virginia
Miami University in Oxford, Ohio

CHANCE ME!!! Please be brutal, I really am lost in this whole college thing, and I need to buck up...

oh and i got 12s on the ACT and SAT essays

i got a 210 on my PSAT (72, 65, 73) and possible NMSF in my state

A 4.07 GPA, 34 ACT and 2250 SAT is far from being a “failure at life”. I don’t know too much about the schools on your list, but given your stats i’d say you have a good shot at all of them!

Getting a 3.6 UW with the most rigorous course load at your hs certainly doesn’t suck, but then again I guess you’re always compared to your brother who got into Harvard. Your position really stinks, it reminds me of this guy a few grades above me – both his older siblings went to Princeton, and he went to Pitt. You have quite a good chance at any school on your list, I would suggest taking 1st semester grades to really show your commitment. The top 2 on your list will probably depend on the precise quality of your essays and the reaction of whoever reads them, you have a great shot at the bottom 3. Good Luck!

First of all, you are not a “failure at life.” You have really good grades and ECs. You could get into many many schools, perhaps not HYPSM but still very very top notch schools.

WashU in STL - Match
Tufts U - Match
University of Michigan-Ann Arbor - Match
University of Virginia - Match
Miami University in Oxford, Ohio - Safety

Depending on what you are looking for in a college, you could look at some top LACs as you would be competitive there as well.

Be happy about what you’ve accomplished (and you have accomplished a lot). Your life is yours to lead, not your parents.

Just be sure to get to Eagle. Getting to Life, and not to eagle will frustrate you…and you already sound pretty frustrated. Do you have a project? Did you finished all your required MB?

welles, the encouragement is very nice, but honestly, WUSTL is not a match, and Tufts is maybe between a match and a reach.

I think all your schools are matches and safeties. Honestly aim a bit higher. Try for at least one or two ivy league schools that you like! Good Luck!!

It seems like you are from STL? Because all the SLU research and stuff. Did you also do research at WashU last summer??
I think all are matches. I wish I can “fail at life” like you. :((

I think it’s an appropriate list unless your rank is very high.

go f*@& yourself, you dam failure, seriously–you think a 4.07 is a fail–you seriously should go to hell for not being grateful for what you have

look, guys, i’m sorry if you’re mad at me for thinking that i’m a failure, but it’s not my fault at all.
i have 2 other brothers in ivies, 2 sisters in stanford…and my parents always compare me to them. so all my life i’ve felt like a failure because my parents have told me =(.

if i sound snobbish, i apologize… i can’t help it!

thanks for the feedback guys…it confirmed my suspicions. i know WashU is pretty much a crapshoot for me…and i’m pretty sure i can get into the ones below with good essays.

you can probably get into michigan. michigan is a public school and i’m pretty sure i can get into there- my counselor said so as well- and you have GOOD stats seriously so i think you can get in there. the other schools i don’t know much about, but good luck!

you have good stats but not great stats. if that makes sense. and **** your family must be crazy smart, 2 at standford and 2 at ivies…!! that is like a genius family for you. but you aren’t stupid, Im heading into 11th grade and i would kill for your stats. Im no CC expert, but I think you can get into great schools like those and quite possible an ivy or 2. i dont know if your bros and sis’ being in ivies help those chances, but you never know unless you try! good luck.

ok, first of all, ur parents are crazy. those are great stats! u should get into all of those
