Ok, so I received a letter of acceptance from University of Minnesota this morning but am having a hard time translating it. It says I am accepted, but not to the college I applied to. I applied to the college of engineering and instead they accepted me into the college of Liberal Arts. I don't understand why they didn't just say I was not accepted and just let me go on with my life looking toward other colleges. I do not have any AP classes in high school because they were not offered to me, so I am thinking that I may have been placed in Liberal Arts College because of that. Upon further inspection of engineering requirements I saw that there are general requirements called "liberal education" requirements, does this mean I was accepted into the college of Liberal Arts so I could do these requirement classes first then I can begin my classes for my major? But still, I should be taking those general requirement classes at the college of engineering, right? I'm very confused about this situation and would appreciate any kind of feedback on if you think this is true.

Well I’m sorry you did not get into your first choice major at CSE. But you must understand its one of the toughest to get into. You have been Accepted in the Carlsen School of Lib Arts because thats your second major. I dont think you got accepted for that purpose to fill your lib ed requirements, but you could try to go there and then transfer after a semester or two if your grades are good.

At parent orientation in July of this year, the dean of CSE said that they only accepted a fraction of the people who applied for CSE (I can’t remember exactly the numbers, but it was something like they accepted 1900 applications out of 7200.) The dean also said that the freshman class had a high ACT median (I think it was 31) and the average GPA was 3.9 (or something like that.) I wish I remembered exactly what he said but it did show that at least last year they took the students with the best stats. It was competitve last year, and I am sure is very competitive to get in for the coming school year too. (My friend’s daughter also applied to CSE but was accepted in CLA instead.) You can contact UMN to see if they made an error, or if they can reconsider. If not and you decide to go there, you can try to transfer in your sophomore year. Good luck.

^^ there is no “Carlsen School of Lib Arts”

CBS = College of Biological Sciences
CDes = College of Design
CEHD = College of Education & Human Development
CFANS = College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences
CLA = College of Liberal Arts
CSOM = Carlson School of Management
CSE = College of Science and Engineering (formerly Institute of Technology)

From the admissions overview page:
[Admission Info - Admission Overview](http://admissions.tc.umn.edu/admissioninfo/fresh_requirements.html)

“Applicants are considered for admission to the college choices listed on their applications in the order listed. If we are not able to offer admission to the choices listed on the application, applicants are automatically considered for admission to other colleges that we determine may be a good fit with their academic interests and preparation.”

If your mind is set on a major that is in CSE (Engineering, Physics, etc…) then continue applying to CSE while you are in CLA (Unless you decide to go somewhere else). Give them a call and ask them how and when you would apply within the University. They are probably just going to make you take all of the prerequisite courses (Calculus, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, etc… for the next year and then apply for Spring 2011 or Fall 2012. I know some majors, such as Physics, automatically accept you after you have taken one of their “tougher” classes.

So just give them a call. Remember that a lot of people transfer within the colleges, so you can do it to. Good luck!

CSE is more competitive than CLA.

There is some good advice in the above post.

NO NO NO. Wait a second. This exact same thing happened to me except in CSM. I was accepted into CLA mid-January, didn’t think I got into CSM. Another acceptance arrives last week to CSM. Just CLA gets back faster, so another letter could be coming?

Admitted off the waitlist?..would that happen already?

That happened to my daughter as well. She received her acceptance letter in early January for CLA. We then received another acceptance letter from CSE after she had confirmed her enrollment.

Be patient - it could happen soon.
