I've been nominated to attend the 2006 National Young Leaders Conference in DC...

Is this junk mail? Should I apply for this? Does this really mean I'm smart or is this just a commercial?

I got nominated too. They want money = they are scamming. I'm not saying your not smart, but it's rather commercial.

Can I use this to embellish my college applications?

i would think it might look a little stupid. if you go and pay to go, then why not put it. but just for getting nominated, i really wouldnt put it

this is stuff that you can ask your teachers to nominate you. its crap basically

check out how much it costs - and you think this is an honor?????????

Well, I know people who have gone and had tons of fun. It improved their understanding of government, public speaking skills, debate skills...plus, the handbook you get there is incredibly useful for AP gov't cases. That book saved my partner and I when we were doing our project earlier this year - luckily, she went to it. So, it might be a scam, but a useful scam at that.

If you have the money and the interest, it's a great experience. Merely attending won't give you a boost on your college applications, but if you draw knowledge from the conference and apply it successfully in other ways (essay contests, debate competitions, etc.) it would most definitely help. I've heard that you really learn and experience a lot, so if money is not a problem, I would consider attending.

^ Yeah thats true, but in the end NYLF/NYLC are not all that special, and its 2000 dollars for 1 week of conferences ...hrrmm .. try to get into something that doesn't require you to pay, they are a little more competitive.

I got nominated also. Sounds like a big huge scam. I could get a car for the money they're asking for 1 week of nothing.

yep, i got nominated too, but i was actually nominated by a teacher, and i talked to a girl from my school who went and she said it was really educational, but it was long and sort of boring. so i mean i think if you want to be in politics it's a good thing, but if not, then it's just a huge waste of money, which is why i decided not to go.

If you're looking for prestige, then consider TASP. It is the prestigious summer program offered to high-schoolers(yes even more so than RSI) and it is completely free!!! If you attend, your college essays will be very good and the seminars will teach you a lot of useful information regarding public address. Be warned, it's VERY competitive and is only open to current high school juniors.

well i got it too. twice! last year and this year.
last year i just got it like that.
this year, my gym teacher recommended "anyone who is interested".

so i guess it's not that prestigious or important. . but very expensive!! ;)
