i think being a non-english speaking immigrant will excuse your 95th percentile CR and W scores.

@MrWheezy , what’s Xiggi method?
@IBfootballer, in Korea, kids who never even went to the U.S. get above 2300. In one Korean high school, 14 kids went to Harvard last year.
I don’t think it would be an excuse for me… I should just try my best :D:D

i am familiar with those schools (like daewon, I assume?). their purpose is solely to get students in to a top US college, and from what I’ve heard, they are quite unpleasant.

you did not bend your life ENTIRELY around getting in to a top college. it is not expected you do so.
I suggest you don’t start bending your entire life around the SAT when your scores won’t get you thrown out of consideration at those colleges. There are other things you could focus on to improve your chances. If you think you can improve your scores without sacrificing better things, then by all means, do so. but once you’ve reached that benchmark you have, there are other things to spend your time on.
your scores won’t get you into an ivy. no scores will. even with only 87 posts’ experience on CC, you should have learned by now that excelling in school and on tests is not enough to get you into a top school.

It’s the stickied thread http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/68210-xiggis-sat-prep-advice.html

Haha yes, in Korea, the competition is pretty damn crazy. But to be honest, it’s very hard beating those kids on GPA/SAT alone. You should focus some part of your summer on ECs as well. Pursue a passion (if you haven’t already), a summer research internship/project, or something that shows that you have a passion for something. With that said, IBfootballer is right.

But Howon, have you ever thought of going back to Korea and taking some SAT hagwons in Seoul or Busan? That’s what some of my friends are doing for their summer. (I live in Busan, Korea atm)

@Ibfootballer, MrWheezy
Thank you for your great advices!
I’m supposed to do an internship starting from next week at a renowned engineering company from 8:00AM ~ 4:30PM.
Also, I’m running a philanthropic music organization with some of my musically talented friends… Should I keep looking for more ECs to do? (such as researches)

I’m really surprised that you guys know that well about Korean students.
I have never thought of going back to Korea just to study for SAT… that’s ridiculous.
There is a number of places for the SAT where I live, but I think it’d be better for me just to study on my own than getting a tutor.

I am not going to invest all of my time into SAT scores, but I certainly believe that I could get a higher score if I took it just one more time.
Should I look for more EC opportunities?

ps. I thought raising the scores is my only way to increase my chances at this point because I’m already a rising senior. I’ve done everything I can since I realized the importance of ECs (around sophomore year?)
It was a bit late start but I don’t regret it too much…

^you are running a philanthropic music organization?what do you have to do with it?

haha we’re just trying to perform in various places, etc… Nothing great!

Which of those books did you like best for CR?

I would suggest looking at the brand new Blue Book, which has 3 more SATs, the College Board Online Course with 7 SATs, or the old 10 Real SATs books (ignore the analogies and stuff like that)

I seriously doubt you did everything. Princeton Review offers the 11 Practice Test Book.

And I admire your diligence but you dont work hard enough. I seriously doubt you can get 2400 especially if you’re a junior turning senior this fall.

Believe me I know what Im talking about

Quick Tip: Review thoroughly. At your stage: NOTHING but real CB tests

howon92, since you’ve finished everyone what’s your take on McGraw Hill? I have their Math Self-tutor book or something, Have you tried that?

McGraw was overall fine but its score scale is somewhat distorted.

You’re probably already starting to do this if you’ve run out of prep materials, but have you tried repeating sections from the Blue Book? You’ll probably end up missing many of the same questions (despite thorough review of your wrong answers on previous occasions); the repetition will allow you to internalize the mechanisms used by SAT question writers on the critical reading and writing sections (you obviously don’t need to prep for math). I have 800s in critical reading and writing (740 math :() and I’m a firm believer in the predictability of both these sections. Good luck!

It seems like you’ve already done so much independent prep for the SAT already that it just comes down to confidence and calm nerves on test day really. If you have those, you’re a sure 2300+. The only thing I can advise you to do when you’re done with your last few workbooks is to keep your vocabulary fresh and don’t over work yourself before fall comes. I kind of had the same situation as you since I also did tons of SAT books (BB, Barron’s, MCGraw, PR11test, some Gruber’s, other workbooks) but still got 2210 on January when I kind of expected better. I didn’t have any other books so I stopped intensely studying for the SAT and decided to retake in June with little stress. Ended up getting a 2360 with 780+ in all sections to my surprise. So I think relaxing a little more this summer in terms of SAT studying (don’t do a book a day - might be negative on your brain, seriously) would definitely help improve your score to where you want it to be.

im reading all of these posts right now. and all this info really helps thanks everyone. hey honwon can i pm you? i had a couple specific questions i wanted to ask you? thanks

cherrysoda94

a couple of people have pm’ed me to sell their QAS.
I can’t think anything but they’re trying to scam.
Is there anyway that I can access to the released QAS’s?

i dont wanna sell QAS’s i just had some questions about the books you used to prepare for the SAT so i wanted to know if i could PM you? is that ok?
