If you don't know what it stands for, it's the US Military's Don't Ask Don't Tell legislation.
What are your thoughts on it?

Personally I feel that it needs to be modified to prevent certain things from happening such as active pursuance, and that it could work.

i thought you were asking us what we thought about defense against the dark arts

Hah, I thought it was something to do with alcoholism.

Eh, I don’t get it. Most people I know in the military just don’t give a damn about gays in the military. Should just change it to “don’t ask don’t care”. It’s funny though because at school our JROTC is some kind of champion or 2nd in the state (TX) yet it’s practically LGBT. Soooo many gay students and couples and it’s whatever. The military are some great people and honestly I find they just don’t care about “DADT” but it’s more a political issue.

It’s stupid. Why is it that straight people are free to pursue lovers in the military, but when it leaks out that someone in the military is gay, people go bat shiz? Ridiculous.

Defense Against the Dark Arts, however, is a great program that works well when there isn’t a frequent change of staffing, such as what occurred in the late 1900s.

It’s only useful if learning that there are gays will lessen possibility of success…which it doesn’t so…

Defense Against the Dark Arts - Snape was pretty bad :(

“It’s stupid. Why is it that straight people are free to pursue lovers in the military, but when it leaks out that someone in the military is gay, people go bat shiz? Ridiculous.”

Well, straight or gay there wouldn’t be any pursuing of lovers in the military due to prohibitions of fraternizing. Two gay guys in the military wouldn’t be allowed to hook up the same as a guy and girl. Which is why I never get all the fear of the army suddenly becoming incredibly gay. It’d honestly be no less gay then it already is. I don’t want gays to be required to tell sexual preference just like we report race, I’d just prefer people to not care.

Conceptually, DADT is a stupid idea implemented because of nonsensical conservative bias. Personally, I hope it would stay because: 1) may prevent me from getting drafted if there will be a draft and 2) I absolutely loathe war or fighting in general; the less people in the military the better. The world would be so much better if there aren’t any military (maybe a small group of 1000 or so people to counter random terrorism(, bu alas, stupid violent nature of humans will prevail.

I am undecided on this issue, but if I have to choose, I’d say that I want it to stay.

EDIT: It’s interesting to see an ad on top of this page that says “Gay Military Dating”

I come from a military family. Every one of my family members says the same thing about DADT, “As long as he’s (or she’s) got my back when I’m running through enemy territory, I could give two s**ts about what he or she does in the bedroom.”

FWIW, people aren’t allowed to have sexual relations in the military anyway (not saying they don’t, I’m saying you can get Court-martialed for it though) so it should be nobody’s business who or what your sexual orientation is.

I come from a military family as well. I think my views have changed on it here. In all honesty, I could give a rat’s ass about homosexuality, they’re people, they live their life, none of my business. I’ve just had some tough discussion with diehard conservatives on the issue.

I am aware that sexual relations are in fact not allowed in the military - so why does DADT even exist? Honestly, I feel that it creates unnecessary tensions in the military. If these men and women can’t be trusted to be tolerant of other people’s sexual orientations, they shouldn’t be trusted with guns.

@ryanxing - DADT isn’t exactly the best method to keep people away from the armed forces. It promotes intolerance, not an antiwar movement.

The irony…I have a “Gay Military Dating” commercial.

Well, in TX it’s stereotyped that we’re full of ignorant die-hard bush supporters. It depends on the area of TX your in but most don’t really like bush and always criticize our governors. The conservatives I meet are against homosexuality on religious belief which is whatever to me. I feel like that can easily change in the future but that’s just me. They actually also not really caring on DADT because they just like everyone in the military. I do get the feeling they’d be odd at actually meeting a gay guy in the military. I could actually see gay marriage being allowed in TX in a few years, I have this feeling but it’d take too long to explain. TX isn’t actually too conservative but they are for little government intervention, it’s kinda that guy shouting “GET OFF MY PROPERTY!” deal, that’s the small cities. Big cities are much more democratic, except Dallas, and no one likes Dallas.

lol lucky I’ve seen that through the state reps, some of which don’t do your state justice.
