I've heard the rules are strict!

So, I have heard from a lot of people that BU has really strict rules for students (i.e. hard to get friends – even ones in the university – into dorm room / building). What are the rules really like? Are there a strict curfew and dorm rules?

No curfew and the guest policies were changed dramatically at the beginning of the fall semester so it's really no problem getting whoever you want in whenever you want...but yeah it USED to be a problem

Good to hear. My opinion of BU just went up..a lot.

hmm now that I'm thinking about it are you sure the rules you heard about had to do with the guest policy. Cause no rules get more strict than BU's drug policy. Trust me I know. Even alcohol prohibition is strictly enforced and almost sought after.

The guest policy was recently changed quite a bit. It is much easier to bring friends into dorms. There never was a curfew. It used to be that you had to sign in other on campus students into your dorm after 10 or something. I don't even remember exactly but the rules were rediculous. They made it alot more student friendly. I can bring people over anytime I want, have people stay the night whenever I feel like without getting a write-up, etc. So don't worry about the guest policy because it isn't a problem anymore. And as somebody mentioned, the alcohol and drug policy is pretty strict so just be smart about those kinds of things if you choose to engage in them (thuogh I would personally recommend not venturing into drug territory)

yeaaah drugs are baaad.. mmmmk?

...what's funny is the two socially accepted drugs, yes alcohol and nicotine/tobacco are drugs, are some of the worst for you save for like the harder opiates. However, BU IS in the United States and as well all know sometimes the facts don't matter. They can't really play the whole legality card either because minors posessing alcohol is just as much against the law..except when you're caught..at the worst.. you'll pay some kinda bs fine whereas you get caught with a little pot and your entire future goes up in smoke...

Woah, what is it about this drug/alcohol policy? Please tell.

If they find you with alcohol in your room, there is a chance you may lose your housing. If they find you with drugs in your room, the same applies. There should really be no surprise in this. It used to be even more strict but has gotten a little better. In the past, if someone needed an ambulance, the BUPD would be notified and the student(s) would get in trouble. This made it so people would forgo calling an ambulance even if it was necessary just to avoid getting in trouble. Now, students are protected if they make the call because it is for the safety of the student who needs an ambulance. I mean, I know lots of kids who keep a bit of alcohol in their rooms. You just need to be smart about it. If you need to drink, do it off campus and you will be better off.

Thank you for enlightening me, devilsrule. It's good to know especially as you're about to decide where you're going.

What if they find you with alcohol in your room, and you're of legal age?

The rule is, if you are 21, you can bring up to a certain amount of alcohol into your room as long as it stays in your room. By the way, asdfjkl1, I am a junior here at BU. No decision to be made. So I can certainly answer any questions you have on the school.

little clarification...if they find alcohol in your room on a first offense they have the authority to kick you out of housing, however, I challenge you to find an instance where this has happened. I know people in a number of situations who have been caught barfing in toilets, sprawled out on floors in common rooms, and with plent of alcohol in rooms and even at second offenses there will still only fines. On the other hand if you are caught with pot or any other drug you WILL be kicked out of housing. And at BU being "caught" with pot is the equivalent of having TWO RAs smell it on you (that inlcudes just having smoked and smelling like it or having a large quanity in your room and it smelling).

Thank you for your offer devilsrule! I'll try to think up questions, though I'm quite terrible at normal ones.

A lot depends on your housing. BU has big dorms, little dorms, apartments and stuff in between. Big dorms have much more security and more looking-over-the-shoulder RA's. Small dorms and apartments . . . well, the housing people will likely step into your room during a vacation to see if you have any illegal appliances in view but otherwise you might never see an authority figure.

Since a lot of kids live in the city, particularly in Allston, there are many parties at houses and apartments.

I recently stayed overnight with a friend at BU and the process was pretty easy. All they really did was take my signature and hold my driver's license.

The guest policy still sucks. It's only because we live in a city that security is so strict. If the guest policy stayed the way it was 2 years ago, I probably would have never came here.

The way it works now is:

There is 24-hour security in the lobby floor of all major residences. Any BU student can swipe into any BU dorm on his own as long as it is before 2 AM. After 2 AM you have to be signed in and leave your ID with the security guard downstairs. Some security guards, well actually most security guards tend to be *s. For example, at Caflin hall you have the same 4 or 5 guards that rotate each week, after the first semester of school they may not know you by name but they sure as hell know your face. One time I went downstairs to get a bottle of water and the vending machine (as usual) decided to eat my money so I told they guard "hey I left my ID upstairs and I need to get water, I'm going to the building next door to the vending machine and Ill be right back." Of course, being the *'s that they are, I was refused and had to take the elevator back up to the 12th floor, open my door, get my ID and go all the way back down.

Long story short, the whole strict ID thing is really a pain in the ass and a joke sometimes.

On the alcohol policy, it all depends on your RA. If your RA is cool and your smart about drinking in your dorm then you will be fine. DONT blast loud music, dont have a hundred people in your room, and dont stumble out in the hallway constantly. If you get caught then more than likely you will get a fine. Usually around $100-$150 for your first offense.

On the drug policy... don't do drugs. If you've made it this far and got yourself into BU, then I'm sure you can hold out for another 4 years drug free.

Oh.. and dont pee in the elevators. That can get you in a lot of trouble. No matter how late it is and how drunk you are, it is never a smart thing to do.

Pee in the elevators? o_O Someone has done this before?

JS- you are incorrect. Not ANY bu student can swipe into ANY BU dorm. I am a BU student and I can't swipe in to any dorm. I live off campus

Any on-campus student can swipe into a dorm.
