I've just completed my sophomore year and now I want to transfer. What happens next?

I've just wrapped up my sophomore year at a university ranked about 100th nationally. I've thought about this all semester long and hard- I have to transfer. I only have the opportunity to go to college once, and I want a quality experience. But schools don't take applicants who have started their junior year, apparently, so I'm in an awkward place.

Should I take a gap year to avoid the completion of too many credits? Is this even possible? I desperately want to transfer to the best school possible- an Ivy maybe?- I have a 4.0 at my current university and an SAT of about 2050 which I could easily retake.

I'm very nervous about my future, any advice would be appreciated!

Yes, you can take a gap year to avoid earning too many credits.

But first read the college websites carefully, some will not permit you to apply as a transfer if you have more credits than an entering jr, while others will let you apply but will require that you spend 2 years on campus.
