I've lived in CA for 6 years, but i might have to pay out-of-state cost????

i've been living in CA for 6 years, along with my father.

my mother had lived in CA up until 2 years ago, when she moved to Georgia.
they are not divorced or anything, but she just acquired a new job over there.
they have been filing join tax returns for the past 6 years,

so here is the question. i know that me and my father have lived in CA for 6 years, and that i SHOULD qualify for resident tuition.
however, my father is moving to Georgia with my Mother next year. they will be filing GA taxes . does that mean i will have to begin paying out-of-state tuition, even though i have physically lived in CA for 6 years?

help!!!!!

bump!!!

Yes, unfortunately, if the ‘source of support’ is mainly or entirely out of state, then you are too.

think of it this way. If you had lived in CA for most of your life but your parents both completed a move to GA last year, you would have been OOS regardless of your prior time here.

I’m fairly sure that you don’t have to re-file residency status each year. So if you’ll already be enrolled (which it sounds like, if your father is moving to Georgia and you aren’t), it might not matter.

I think I read in the catalog for my community college that if you went to a CA h/s for 3 years you would still have residency there even if you moved out of state… Try googling it, I am unsure if it was just for my CC or something.

thanks for all the input!

If you were educated at Cali high school for at least 3 years, and you plan to graduate in CA high school, then you get to pay in-tuition fee although you are technically considered a “non-resident”. The in-tuition fee will be provided as a form of waiver.

The 3-year CA HS and graduation rule applies to undocumented students. US citizens and those here on a visa do not qualify.

@ Dr.T, for residency consideration, minor (under 18) follows the parents. If your father is moving to Georgia after you turn 18 and you have the means to support yourself (declaring as an independent student), then you can hold onto your CA residency. The trick is showing that you are actually independent (having a job that actually pays all your bills, etc.).

So I am somewhat confused at the wording of all of this so I think it is best to just contact someone at UCB and ask them yourself… but this is from the UCSB website
[UC Tuition Exemption for California High School Students, Office of the Registrar](404 - Page Not Found)

I do know that when I went to school in Montana I was able to claim residency because my father lived there and claimed me on my taxes, BUTTT when I came back and tried to go to a CC in CA they said I was consdiered OOS now even though I was still 18 and my mother was a CA resident.
Do schools reevaluate your residency status every year? This doesn’t seem likely to me and I don’t think they would classify you all of a sudden as OOS when you have obviously never left CA because you have been attending school there.
