I am applying to local colleges this semester. I will fully admit to being a slacker(B in psych anyone? that's just a pathetically easy class, same with anthropology). I was in highschool and I am now as well. I started taking courses at age 16 FYI hence the LOONG list. I know there's some F' ups in math... before I took calc at 16 I thought I was a math God then the **** hit the fan.

going the bus/econ route(business administration, or Biz-econ, or econ etc.). first choices are UC Irvine, CSU fulerton, and CSU Long Beach.
second choices are UC Santa barbara, UC San Diego, UC Riverside and San Diego SU

Your GPA is still decent and good enough to be able to TAG. I can see you had a problem with calculus 2 there XD. I would say it is the hardest out of the 3 with those advanced integration techniques and infinite series.

I would say for Biz Admin for UCI chances are pretty slim since they taking only 15 transfers, but you can TAG UCI for bizecon and they offer biz minors in management and accounting. You should not worry about CSULB and CSUF. You will probably get in as long as u got your pre-reqs and 3.0+. I also suggest that you pursue business admin at CSUF or CSULB since you live in the OC. Employers around there always hiring graduates from there.

Just keep up your grades and u will be fine.

I don’t want to take calc 4 though… like, I really don’t. I will if I HAVE to, but I really don’t want to take it… you guys can see why… the CSUs don’t require it, nor does UCSB.
looking at this stuff though… I just feel bad, so many chances where a little effort would’ve helped A LOT. ohh well live and learn, CC GPA goes away at UCs, and I think it does at cal states too if I’m not mistaken. Thank you for telling me not to apply as biz admin at UCI, I’ll try another major.

You’re a high school senior? I don’t think you can apply as a transfer student*

So TAG doesn’t apply. I didn’t read your transcript but if you have completed the IGETC, however, that WILL count even if you enter as a freshman.

Freshman admission is a lot harder and they look at a lot more. If you get in as a freshman, your units will still count. You will be just like a transfer student, except you have to apply as a freshman.

You should apply first. If you don’t get in, see which campuses are offering winter admission and you can get in for sure with TAG.

You don’t have to take cal 4 for uci. Just take cal 1 and 2 then transfer. Take math 4 (Math for Econ) instead. Its like super watered down multivariable cal/linear algebra class.

CC GPA goes away at the UC but still affects you if plan to attend grad school (plan to get a masters right?) because they take account all college grades.

these are the lower division major requirements for Biz econ at UCI
ECON 15AB-No Equivalent Courses
ECON 20AB-ECON 180 & 185
ECON 25-No Equivalent Course
MATH 2AB-MATH 180(or 180H) & 185(or
185H)*
MATH 4-MATH 280(or 280H) & 235 or 285(or
285H)
Computer Science CS 170

I wouldn’t have had taken Econ15AB, Econ25, CS170, or Math285 because I’m at 18 units next semester all things considered just getting my stuff knocked out

is TAG still possible with just the two econ courses with an A, Math 180 B, 185C, 182H B(which may or may not replace BOTH 180 and 185). I know I completed the courses it said I MUST take, but I’m still wondering.

I’m probably over worried. UCI isn’t hard to get into, nor are the cal states. I still just feel so much like a failure for my mess ups in calcII. I was skipping 3 grades by the 5th grade, I’m SUPPOSED to get As in math without trying… sorry for the rant.

Also a quick question about the UCI apps, is an essay required? are SAT/ACT required?

Don’t take math 285 or 280. Just take Math 4, which is one quarter only at UCI. Econ 15 A-B are just statistics for econ majors. Computer science is just an gen ed class for the school of social sciences. You can make this all up your first year and still start on upper division classes too. If you have finished IGETC than you are ahead in gen ed so you got time to make up those courses.

The only pre-reqs to start upper division is cal1 + cal 2 and micro/macro econ. You will finish your degree in 2 years easily after you transfer trust me. You will even have to time to do undergrad research or pick up a biz minor if you choose to.

But still I strongly suggest getting biz admin degree from CSUF or CSULB. Work an internship while you are still in undergrad and earn a good paying job after you graduate.

Uh. Now I am confused. Are you a transfer student or a high student? I guessing a transfer cause on your transcript it says you finished 54 units and taking classes for this year. The UC app is the same for all UC’s and yes essay is required. SAT/ACT are only for high school students applying to college.

I’ll make CSUF and CSULB my first tier choices and UCI my 1.5 tier with the others on the list being tier 2.

I’ve read a bit on the essay things and know in general that I should focus primarily on one thing instead of trying to mention thousands of little things. I know I should write so that I show growth and development and the like. I am young and stupid, but i am learning and maturing, I really do appreciate everyone’s advice, sorry if this is going a bit off of a UCI app question since it now looks like I’ll aim more for a CSU, but I still want to try to get into UCI… A lot of people are saying CSULB or CSUF though so iTransfer your advice is definitely helping push me over the edge.

I roughly have my schedule for next semester planned out(17-19 units, EUGH) to have MOST of my IGETC done

Just answer the question to the essay with honesty. Its not really hard. As long as your answer is not ridiculous it is good enough. I doubt they will even read it. I think the only schools who actually read it are UCLA and UCB because of their # of applicants and high selectivity.

You will probably make it to all the schools you want tho. Just do well this year and you will be fine.

The next question is do you want to major in business or economics. They are different. Compare the curriculum of both majors and see what will enjoy and benefit more from. Don’t just run to school just cause it has UC on it.

The reason I say CSUF or CSULB is because

A. It is business.
B. You can commute
C. Save a butt load of cash

Honestly I think econ is a waste of time unless you actually like the subject. If you are majoring it just to enter the business field than don’t. You will end up sitting in class thinking to yourself, “why am I learning this” the whole time. If you are actually fascinated with subject than pursue it.

And UCI will have graduates of biz admin real soon and employers around the area will probably recruit them before bizecon majors. Usually people do econ when the school doesn’t offer undergrad business program (unless you like econ). But when they offer both I bet business would preferred from the employers.

But what ever you choose you to do just have experience under belt and you will be okay.

I like econ, I love debating and the subject GENUINELY interests me, though I’m more of a fan of Hayek and Von Mises than Keynes and everything is Keynesian right now… and I have spent a lot of time debating with people and conversing with them over socio-political-economic theory. The stuff DOES intrigue me. I have ADD, oddly enough economics is one of the few things which intrigues me. not sure how that’ll change in the upper division though. That said I have several friends at both CSULB and CSUF who are business majors and are a year ahead of me now who I could get help from if I ever needed it.

that said either degree would land me in roughly the same sort of jobs I imagine seeing as I’m aiming for some sort of management(traditional overpaid executive) or consulting job for which business, business-econ or econ would suffice, though a lot of econ majors end up as ITs of some sort which I wouldn’t mind as having as an option. As far as course load is concerned, i’d imagine I’d do reasonably well on any route. What degree would aid me the most in going for a masters in business finance as that’s what I ultimately want to get.

also the commute thing would be around a 10 minute commute to UCI vs. a 25 minute commute to either cal state(unless I move in with my grandmother who is close to CSUF, then it’s not too much) not worried about the commute time though.

not worried about the cash either, I’ve got enough scholarship money for both and my father is reimbursing me for every semester I get all Bs or better. That said I’m very frugal and the few thousand dollar a year difference would make my life much much much more comfortable, heck i might be able to get away not working almost full time if I go to a cal state.

for CSULB should I apply as an econ major, a business econ major, biz admin(management inf systems, though it looks like all biz admin is impacted) or some other similar major?
for CSUF should I apply as biz admin, or economics?

I’ve yet to take a computer literacy test as required by CSULB, but I spend most of my free time online researching electronics parts and theory(I’m a computer enthusiast) and build computers and for other’s systems on the side so I’m not particularly worried. Fear of outsourcing is the only reason I don’t major in the field.

I would just say study biz admin with concentration with finance. Since that is the career you are looking into. But if you like econ than there is no stopping you. You can probably study anything (even chemistry?) and still apply for a masters in business finance.

I suggest saving as much money as possible because you will probably end up with the same entry level position from anywhere you graduate. But if the UC experience is worth paying to you then go for it.

I had him for 182. He’s a good professor. He’s not good to take if you’re a chronic slacker though. I’ve gotten by on a genius level IQ and no studying for my whole life, it doesn’t work in his course. Could’ve had an A if I worked harder though. He’s fair and if you work hard and memorize the proofs little by little you’ll do well. Any F’ ups in his course were purely my own undertaking. I could’ve had an A the second time around but I didn’t want to push myself like mad on the final. I basically turned in half a test, wrote songs on the proofs and wished him good luck. I took my B instead of struggling for that near-perfect test(was under a lot of stress at the time)

looks like I cannot edit my above post…
quick question. I received academic renewal for my poor grades.
on my college apps do I put “AR” or the grade I received?
