I'm a junior at a top 25 school, and have a whopping 2.4 GPA. I am doing horrendous this semester and frankly I have no excuses. I need a change of pace but despite my GPA am rather ambitious. I worked in finance in NYC over the summer and have a job offer (which I can no longer accept since I will not graduate on time). I'm considering taking time and going to a community college then going somewhere else but only if I can get in to a good school.

Let's assume for a second that I can pull a 4.0 at a community college (which I think I am capable of). Will my undergrad performance preclude me from gaining admittance to a top school even if I prove that I've turned it around?

Since you said you're currently at a top school, I think that would have some weight on your poor grades. Admissions people would see that you are clearly at a difficult school, which makes earning a high GPA harder. That said, I don't know how MUCH help getting a 4.0 at a community college would do. Don't get me wrong, I do think it would help you. I just don't know if it would be enough to get you admitted into another top school, especially considering your low GPA at the first one.
