Well, yeah they are, but not more so then other top colleges. Schools like Stanford and Mit are even more prestigious then some of the Ivies, but don't get that special label. I think its kind of lame how people think that Ivy League colleges are better then non ivies just because of an old sports confrence organized years ago. I mean schools like stanford, mit, duke, johns hopkins etc. are equivalent to or in some cases better then the ivy league collges, but they dont get the instant name recognition like an ivy leage college. So, by excluding other top schools, the ivy league is artificially making themselves seem better when in fact they may be worse. Dont get me wrong, the ivy league schools are amazing, but still other top schools are missing out. still, i dont think they care, schools like stanford are rocking so hard they dont care about ivy league status. its just kinda lame that the general population does.

Trust me, nobody thinks Brown is more prestigious than Stanford. The ivy moniker does not mean that much.

I think that when people say Ivy League, most of them mean HYP.

What Harvard should do is hire a REALLY good coach to rebuild the football team so that they are actually in the first division. Harvard doesn't need the Ivy League title.

Then we wouldn't have The Game, which is basically a bowl game in and of itself.

well.. i find the ivies a lot tougher to get into and better schools altogether than johns hopkins and duke; however, you are right in that stanford and mit are just as good.

either way... the ivy leagues got their status for a reason.. because theyre really good schools. they're still top notch, in my opinion, and better than most.

and yeah.. i mean i myself prefer stanford to almost every school.. but the ivies have their rep for a reason. =]

and besides.. the other schools don't need the "ivy" title.. theyre great by themselves =]

Right on.

I agree with the OP.

If you ask many common people, and I've talked to many in my school, they will outright say Stanford and MIT are Ivy Leagues.

And better than a lot (or all) of them.

well, most people think that ivies are really special because they think any top school is in the ivy league. if you ask the average person on the street about stanford, he will answer that it is an ivy league school somewhere in the new england area.

btw: yeah when people say they went to the ivy league, people assume its HYP and if you tell them its Upenn, they'll go "i thought that was a state school" so even saying "i went to the ivy league" sets up expectations that you are a HYP grad and not one of the "lesser ivies"

all of this isnt important unless you're just looking for prestige. still, although we dont like to admit it, we're all looking for prestige on some level.

Haha the ongoing debate.

Someone from Stanford says Stanford is better than all of them, you can discredit that because he/she went to Stanford.

Someone from Harvard says Harvard is better than all of them, you can discredit that because he/she went to Harvard.

Someone that is supposedly "unbiased" and has gone to neither can make a decision either way, but how can we take his/her word for it if he/she didn't attend either school and hasn't had the experience first-hand?

They're all unbelievable schools, and almost anyone would kill to go to any of them. Yet the rivalry continues...

Shark bite, I'm almost certain pretty much everyone knows Stanford is west coast...

That is very true. Everyone knows S is on the west coast, but I bet there are a lot of people that mistakenly believe it is Ivy league, not knowing that is is just a sporting conference. Even a good friend of mine the other day told me the only Ivy she was applying to was Duke...

and yes, even my own mother thought Penn was a state school

I didn't know Penn was an Ivy up until the end of junior year when my GC recommended that I look at it.

Surprisingly, nobody ever mistakes Stanford for a high school, considering it is called "...Junior University".

i go to college
baltimore city college....
but it's a high schoool

go figure

I was raised under the belief that Rice University is an Ivy.

Meh, de facto Ivies.

I always thought that the University of Southern California was an Ivy league school...

I always thought Harvard was an ivy league school.

Oh wait a second...

You used 'de facto' incorrectly, unless you mean to say that they are, in fact, Ivies.
