Ivies, Stanford, Penn, Safeties (unsure about ECs)

Hey, so I'm beginning the application process right about now and am curious about exactly how good my chances are at a variety of schools. I think I have ivy-quality academics, but I'm not entirely sure about my extracurriculars/community involvement. So what do you guys think?

Colleges:
Stanford, Yale, Harvard, Dartmouth, Brown, Columbia, UPenn, Northeastern, UNH
Intended major: Pre-med or pre-law...somewhat undecided though

Basic info:
Male
Asian-American (Chinese)
New Hampshire

Academics:

SAT: 800 M 800 CR 760 W = 2360 (one take, 11th grade)
SAT II: 800 Math IIC, 750 Literature (11th grade), 790 Chemistry (10th grade)
PSAT: 231 (10th), 227 (11th), NM Semifinalist/finalist (unless something ridiculous happens)
GPA: 3.99/4.00 UW, 4.52/5.00 W (all 3 years), 4.63/5.00 W (10th and 11th grade only)
* Calculated including my current semester grade
Class rank: 1/530ish (somewhat competitive public high school)
Course difficulty: the most difficult / advanced courses available (due to required courses, it's nigh impossible to take any APs prior to junior year, and even then no more than 3)
APs: Psychology, Calculus BC, Chemistry (11th grade)
Macroeconomics, English Literature, Statistics, Biology (planned for senior year)
My school offers no IBs and operates on a block scheduling system in which most APs take up the entire school year with 90 minute blocks.
**High School Success:
* My school sends a couple kids to top-tier schools each year.

Extracurriculars & Volunteer Work:
Novel writing (out of school) - 10th, 11th, 12th (planned) - I intend to elaborate on this in an essay. I've been working on a novel since sophomore year, and though I've revised / restarted it numerous times, I've put well over 1000 hours into its development.
Math Team - 10th, 11th, 12th (planned) - Captain, team placed third in class L this year
Spring Track & Field - 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th (planned) - 200m, 400m, pole vault
Volunteer Peer Tutoring - 10th, 11th, 12th (planned) - 50~100 hours so far
2011 Class Council - 11th, 12th (planned) - Student council for the class of 2011, rep
Cubing Club - 11th, 12th (planned) - Founder & President (Rubik's cubes)

Awards:
2nd in state among juniors for Math Team

1 in school for the AMC-12 10th grade (failed this year...haha)

90+ in AMC-12 for underclassmen (I got a certificate...)

Work Experience:
Getting a job this summer

Recommendations / Essays:
- Getting recommendations from my AP Chem and AP Calc teachers primarily...probably a third from my AP Psych teacher if a school requires one humanities rec.
- My guidance counselor is awesome and knows me pretty well.
- Writing my common app essay about my, well, my own writing, what I've learned from it about myself and my ambitions.

So thanks for reading all that. What do you guys think? Thanks!

All your math team will really help. if anything, definitely try to continue volunteering a lot…

It’s going to be hard to make it into HYPS, but you definitely have a chance at all those schools. I guess it’s too late right now, but a little more variety in your extracurriculars could’ve helped. Try getting another leadership position if that’s possible?

Good stats. All non-Ivies are guaranteed (except Stanford, MIT). For ther very top schools, stats and academics are just sorta hurdles. Basically, you’re essays are what will get you in or out.

For the Ivies + Stanford, you’ll need great essays, especially since the applicant numbers are increasing a lot.

Chance me back!

Bump?

You bet.

That looks pretty good, I would say Stanford, Harvard, and Yale are all reach schools for you, UPenn and Columbia would be between low reach and high target, Brown and Dartmouth closer to just target. You seem like one of those couple kids that would go to a top tier school. Math team captain should help, but I dont know how big your math team is. All of your EC’s but 1 can’t be 4 years, which is unfortunate but there is little you can do. Some more leadership would be nice. I have to say we have fairly similar profiles:

Bumping…

ECs are pretty run of the mill unless you happen to write a major novel. Your objective stats and geographic location definitely make you competitive. All the Ivy’s + Stanford are reaches (obviously) but I wouldn’t be surprised if you received 2-3 acceptances.

Solid chances everywhere. At least one acceptance to Harvard, Yale, or Stanford is probable, though far from ensured.

wow, I would be surprised if you did not make it to at least 3 of those schools

chance me

Thanks for all the replies so far. =)

Bump again.

Bump…

Just my opinion – You are #1 in your class with incredible objective scores. However, there are TONS of asian-americans who are applying to Ivy/Near Ivy schools putting you at an automatic disadvantage. Being white, I am also at a disadvantage :frowning: it isn’t fait but it is the way it is (supposedly). Your ECs are good – they are good enough to get you into most every school in the country. The Ivys, however, see so many good/great applications that to be a strong candidate you need to set yourself apart somehow. I knew a girl with very similar activities and schools, she set herself apart with (according to guidance counselor) “the best essay I have ever read!” She was accepted to HYPS + state school. You don’t need great ECs to be accepted (they help) but with your stats and a GREAT essay acceptance to some ivys (i cannot predict which ones) is very likely.

One more bump, I suppose.

Stanford hates people no matter their stats. They are just dream crushing people haters. So I would give you a great shot at the others especially if you put some more work into those E.C.s, but I will not offer any insight into Stanford though because they take extreme pride in knowing they ruined the first 17/18 years of somebody’s life. All of this from someone who never applied and has neutral feelings towards Stanford.

^ Up until that last sentence, I was thinking to myself that you must have been quite angry after your Stanford rejection lol.
