Ivy applicants: how many subject tests are you taking?

This is a poll of sorts. I recently looked through the acceptance threads for HYP and was surprised at how many subject tests some of the applicants had. None of the Ivies require more than two, but many people seem to be taking 3+. I guess this is because of the argument for breadth.

So, if you're planning to apply to Ivies, how many are you taking?

Taken 4 thus far. Planning on an additional 2-4.

4 or 5: Literature, US History, Math II, and either just one out of or both French and Chemistry.

4 = Math IIc, Physics, Chemistry, USH

4 - Math IIc, Physics, USH, debating between Bio and Chem

not sure whether to take Lit., we’ll see after this summer

At most:

Math Level 2 (May, retake if necessary in June)

Chemistry (May, retake if necessary in June, which it probably will be)

Literature (May, retake in June)

Biology (June, retake sometime later if necessary)

U.S. History (October)

World History (October)

Physics (October)

At least:

Math Level 2 (May)

Chemistry (May, retake in June if necessary)

Literature (May, will not send)

4 as well:
Bio M
Literature
Math II
US H

@ the OP: I, too, was a little disconcerted by the raw number of SAT IIs- actually, at the number of standardized tests in general!- taken by CC applicants this year, especially as none of them are free. I need to limit expenses, but I’d also like to be able to choose my best scores, so I’m taking four. Also, I think Harvard requires 3 SAT IIs (although someone could probably affirm/deny that for certain…?) and multiple engineering programs at other top schools require 3 subject tests, as well, so I’d make sure you cover all your bases. Good luck!

I deny: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/harvard-university/891064-harvard-now-requires-only-two-subject-tests.html.

I’m probably only applying to one Ivy and that one only requires two for engineering applicants, but I’m taking three or four since the fee waivers cover three tests.

Math 2 [May, signed up to retake in June just in case]
Chem [same as Math 2]
World History [June - I got a 5 on the AP exam, so if I brush up, I think I’ll be fine]
or
US History [June - Currently in IB History of the Americas, so I’ll just flip through a prep book]

Thanks, silverturtle!

Haha, well I guess I’ll be the underachieving overachiever… I took two on Saturday (Math II and US History), and I’m happy to say that I’m finished with both forms of the SAT.

I really don’t see the point (at least for me personally) of taking anymore. I’m expecting/hoping for an 800 on both Math and History, so there certainly won’t be any weakness in that part of my future application, and the only other reason I can think of to take more would be to demonstrate that I know specific content. I’m taking 5 AP’s this year (USH, Chem, Music Theory, French, and English Lit.), so I’m not concerned about proving my “well-roundedness.” The only major field in which I won’t have an AP score by the time I apply will be math–thus the SAT 2 yesterday.

Perhaps I’m wrong to be complacent with “only” 2, but, quite honestly, I don’t view preparing for/taking anymore tests as worthwhile. Just my two cents.

I’ve taken three and may take three more in October. June will be my 2nd SAT.

Anyone care to enlighten me on the general score choice policies concerning SAT IIs? Do most colleges allow you to choose whichever scores you want to send (as long as it meets the minimum requirement)?

It is not clear whether most colleges’ anti-Score Choice policies extend to Subject Tests. I recommend contacting each school.

It’s the same policy as for the SAT I. That is, if a college doesn’t allow Score Choice, they want all of your scores (you could always fudge the truth). If they do allow it, then you may pick your best tests.

That is the impression that I have received, at least.

Hypothetically speaking, I would rather not send a 790 and an 800 from the same subject test :)

I took lit and math 1 yesterday.
planning on taking 2C after summer planning on how well I do on the June SAT 1. And taking French and Korean in November. If I have time to study over the summer i’ll take bio or chem.

SAT II Math L1, US History, and Spanish. So 3. Maybe I’ll try Korean, but that’s unlikely since I am a native speaker. and tons of other native speakers with 800s apply to Ivy…

3-5

Bio, Math2, US history, maybe Physics, maybe Math1

There are quite a few of us who are taking 3+ :)

I’m planning on 4. I’m also interested in score choice policies as applied to subject tests. Can we use score choice provided we meet the minimum number of subject tests? Colleges need to clarify this somewhere…
