Ivy applicants: how many subject tests are you taking?

Math II is probably actually easier than Math I, if you’ve covered the concepts. It has a much more generous curve.

Math 1
Math 2
Bio
US History
Chem
Spanish
Lit

I have World History and got a 690 on it, so if I have time I am planning on retaking it

out of curiosity, why is everyone taking so many ? there’s honestly no need to do so unless you plan on applying to Northwestern’s intergrated science program or something like that.

xrCalico, was just going to post the same thing!

-U.S History
-Math IIC
-Literary

I’m hoping for 750 + on Math IIC and U.S. History so I could be done w/ subject tests. Anyways depending on how I score on U.S. History/Math IIC/Literary I may end up taking Physics next year as well.

right, yeah same here… why IS everyone taking so many subject tests? Isn’t the requirement only 2?

is a 700 on a subject test (ie US history) considered “bad” at top schools? I don’t mean to sound like a neurotic overachiever, but it feels like everyone who gets into HYPSM, etc, gets at least 750, if not perfect 800’s. Or is that just me?

It’s not bad, but it’s a little low. It’s good to aim for 750+ if you’re applying to HYPS.

to be honest, I think taking so many subject tests (cough jersey cough) is more detrimental to your chances than it is to just take two and do well.

remember christiansoldier? he took SO many AP’s and subject tests and he ended up rejected at harvard yale mit and so on. considering that he was also val of his class and had a 2400, the chances of him getting accepted were a lot better than for normal or less perfect applicants. so why didn’t he get in? i’m willing to bet that adcoms were disgusted by his obvious pandering to standardized testing. he put so much effort and time into things that, to be honest, were only admissions requirements and i think that reflected poorly on his priorities and personality. maybe ap self studying, which i know most ppl do for college admissions anyways, could at least be seen as an attempt to learn something not offered in your own school, but taking all these subject tests? no, i think it just makes it obvious that you are a college-obsessed person with little else to offer a school outside of your perfect test scores.

^ He went 2/4 at HYPS, which is good enough for me. As for the obsession with test scores, you may guess as to why Christiansoldier was rejected, but it’s still only conjecture. My ECs demonstrate my priorities, and my essays definitely convey my personality. Your whole diatribe just sounds spiteful to me. I guess we’ll wait and see how my admissions results turn out.

^ Why are you always so cynical and arrogant?

Three for me:
Biology M
Math Level 2
Spanish

Four:

USH (790)
Math II (780)
Bio (took it yesterday but I figure I got a 790 or 800 from the bio discussion thread)
French w/ Listening (probably got something in the 700s, but don’t know.)

^^^ he actually stated that one of his weaknesses was his obsessive retesting. I’m not hating on you or him specifically, its really just everyone who sells their souls to college admissions because they’re good at filling in bubbles- and think you’re superior because of it. you just fall into that bubble of people.

i’m actually interested to see how you do in admissions; out of genuine interest, not because i want you to fail. although i don’t know the details about your extracurriculars and all that, i think that should you get into a good school, it would really be in spite of your superfluous scores rather than because of them.

3: math 2 (already took), lit (already took), bio (taking next month)
i’ll redo if i need to

i think 4, maybe 5…

October 2010:
Math II: 800
Chem: 790

I took Korean w/ Listening, Biology M, and Literature yesterday…
I’m pretty sure I got 800 in Korean since I’m fluent and just took it for the pretty 800, but the other two, I’m worried about…

Haaaa… I regret procrastinating in exams… My senior year sucks :'(

5 (maybe 4 if I cancel French…) - Korean w/ List, Chem 760, Match IIC, Bio, French w/ List (might cancel)

D took 5. But, only because some of the colleges requested specific SAT IIs depending on which major was chosen, and she wasn’t sure of her major until recently: Math II-790; Chem-760; US History-760; Bio-750; Language w/List-800.

I had no idea that more was better. It seems like an easy enough thing to realize, but it just didn’t occur to me that colleges even considered anything more than the highest two. I was under the impression that two solid scores should be good enough for any school.

^ I don’t necessarily think more is better. If D had been more certain about her major, she definitely wouldn’t have taken so many. She took the first couple as a sophomore when she was still struggling to decide if she would go the science/engineering route or the English/History route. It certainly would have saved me some money! But, better to have too few than to not have the one(s) the colleges require.

… i just did three. US History (800), Literature (740), and Physics but i failed at physics so lets just forget that one haha. I did well in what I want to major in so hopefully I will be okay
