Ivy chances for a Canadian student?

I figured I had a chance until I got 1150 on my SAT I.

You on the other hand have a good chance.

I was quite surprised at the competitiveness of this board...bec in my school, canadian_idol went to Harvard but his stats would be considered "mediocre" on this board...so i dunno....thx anyway!=)

i know uts!

i was supposed to go there in grade seven, but then i decided to stay at my old school because we get a laptop program in grade 9.

i'm at bss right now. do you know that school?

and btw, i still, i think you have a decent chance. plus, harvard loves legacies.

sallie, what grade are you in?

i'm in grade 10.

yeah, i know a couple of people from BSS. i also wrote my SSATs there way-back-when, in grade 6.

it's nice to see Canadian people on this board. it's actually much less intimidating, talking to people who experiences are more like mine (and who seem less hung up on the godd**n "honor societies" and "key clubs". when i see a lot of those on some prep's resume, i must literally turn white sometimes. or red. or green with weird jelousy, who knows what.). it's almost strange to communicate via the internet with people could live right down the street. we've probably passed each other in the street :)

Haha, ya...If you ask me, that honour society/key clubs/orchestra stuff is ********. In Canada, we do meaningful ECs that we ENJOY, not just to stick on our resume!

Mwahahaha.

yeah, i totally agree on that.
i mean, i LOVE debating. it's awesome. and i dont do it so it'll look good on my resume. =)

weirdoone: hahah yeah, they hold those ssat tests at my school. AND YEAH, MAYBE I HAVE SEEN YOU BEFORE! gasp

whenever i like, read threads that are like, "do i have a chance in harvard?" and they have like, AMAZING grades and ecs, and then, people reply: YOU SUCK or something like that, i just get sad. and wilt. and then crawl back into my room. - _ -;; it makes me wonder if these people are MAKING THIS **** UP.

anyways. go canadians. we rock. =) when i grow up, i'm going to be prime minister and abolish the goddamn senate.

how could canadianidol's stats be medicre? I mean, he had probably one of the best i've seen. btw, aliliu, what school do you go to?

I am cdn too! Canadian_Idol's stats were mediocre but if you post them again NOW in this CC generation, you'll see that they wouldn't be considered AMAZING...i dunno....it's soo different now...i am in BC..=)

BTW, could you guys check out and give me some suggestions on my other post?

No offense to Weirdoone, but ur score might just be below the Harvard Range. I think Harvard looks for well rounder ppl, and you really haven't shown that with your math scores. I am like the opposite of you, i have a low verbal, but an alright math (600v, 800m). Anyway, a lot of my torontonian friends are applying to Harvard, I know of about 17, from different region, some from Etobicoke, some from Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Scarborough (3 there) anyway, the point is, their average is about 95.8% for 4 years (i only have an 83% yet listed 4 or 5 out of 300+ students even though my school doesn't officially rank). I think you should take Davidrune's idea and take your tests again. See if you can get it a little higher. But a 91% average is pretty impressive. In my school, the highest is 90%. Anyway, since you say u write well, I guess you have no prob with your essay, unlike me :(. I would highly recommend other school that isn't as famous as harvard, but provides about the same education. Small schools such as Duquesne. I am going to apply there, i heard great things from it from a Teachers Assistant i met at Harvard. I don't think Harvard is as great as everyone thinks, i mean it's a very good school. But i believe it just has the name, 5 or 6 other schools these days provide the same education. Plus, Harvard gives no air conditioning, tv, food isn't the greatest from annerberg. Anyway, this is just my opinion. GL on your application :)

thanks. btw i'm retaking the SAT II in one week, and i've been studying for it (the last one i took with very little preparation). i'll take SAT IIs in December and January, cutting it close. i expect mid 700s in at least 2 of them (Writing + literature), and hopefully 700+ in biology and math I.
they're a bit low, i know, but they're not unacceptable. i have a legacy at harvard, and at princeton too, so that can help somewhat. plus i will send in a tape of myself singing (i flatter myself i'm pretty good, singing in the musical theatre style) and also part of a play i'm currently refining, and which i play to direct/produce.
well, i think the best school for me would be Yale anyway. it's got a killer undergrad program, good drama/english programs, and it seems to be less prejudiced against "pointy" people, as the Yale rep called people like me (and you). my SATs are my weak point. my grades are alright (i know a person who got into Harvard with an 88% senior average).
where are you applying?

Would it be impossible for someone to get into HYPS with a 80-% in Gr.11 term?...IB though....in Canada...?

wow. many canadians interested I see. I'm from Canada too- I'm from markham. Did anyone of you that live in the toronto area attend the Ivy league meeting? Nice to know some are on the same boat as me.

yup, i was there, as were a few other people i know.

yay, i retook the SAT I today. i'm sure i didn't do so well in the verbal as last time: the questions on this one really were stupid. more than usual. oh well, i retook to boost my math score, and i'm sure i did that. what does that mean for me? next to nil, probably, because it still won't be all that high. mediocre here.

there's a Princeton Review book called "SAT for girls", or something like that. i don't have it, and no longer need it, but it had some figures in it that i found interesting. according to the book, assuming it's true, the ratio of guys:girls who get perfect SAT scores is 4:1. the ratio for those who get above 1400 is 3:2, and it gets steadily worse as you ascend the scale. yes girls, things look bleak, don't they? now we all have a great excuse to flunk our SATs, right? i can dream.

have a nice day :)

ps. to the Torontonians, this year will be the 100th Santa Claus parade. you should all watch it, or better yet, go to it. you might not see another one for a long time.

update! wooooooo-hoooooooooo! i got my SAT results back today - 1520!! 800v, 720m. i've drifted onto cloud 9, and i think i will stay there for a couple of days. i got 1370 the first time (with very little prep), and so i studied like the devil for this one - and it certainly paid off! ooh-hoo-hoo, this is great! well, i won't be b****ing about bad test scores again.

two days ago, i wasn't sure i could even hand in an application. you see, my school wanted certain forms handed by nov 1 - it's probably similar at every school - but i handed them in last wednesday. yup, that's the 17th. my guidance counselor was not pleased (and dammit, i need her rec!). she hinted that it might be too late. believe me, i wasn't feeling very well that night, and i sent a begging e-mail to her to help blow things my way. the next day i talked to her again, and she told me it was still okay. just barely. what a stupid thing for me to do, no? almost screw it up for myself, by not handing in the stupid forms on time? well, that's overwith, thank God or whatever's up there.

ps. just another reminder to the Torontonians to come to the Santa Claus parade. I'm going to be there, SAT Biology book in hand. Imagine if we all met up there - hmmm, i'm not sure that would be a good idea - so many tense, and highly strung people strung together, hee hee. but still....sometimes i wish i could see your faces.

so you're applying RD this year?

uh huh. of course, by now it's too late to do ED anyway. i wasn't nearly organized enough to do that, and anyway my first SAT score was 1370. so, definitely not ED.

ohh. well good luck!!! :)
