Ivy Chances

BUMP bUMP buMP bumP bump

In a previous post you asked for decent Econ/business schools in the west. I hear the University of Arizona an Arizona state have awesome economics programs. The OOS tuition might be a little much, but you can probably receive significant financial aid with your GPA and expected test score range.

^That refers to merit aid, not need based aid, by the way.

Thanks for the tip about University of Arizona! I have also heard that University of Michigan-Ann Arbor- has a good econ program, but again it all relies on the aid I can get. Any ideas as to safety schools for me?

Also, my current list for colleges to apply to looks like this:
UPenn (Wharton)
Princeton
Columbia
Duke
UVa
Carnegie Mellon (Tepper)
And a safety school

What about Oxford/Cambridge, and ICL?
And how about University of Wisconsin-Madison as a safety school?

If you really get 2200, I would like to say you match all of the universities except for Harvard and UPenn, why don’t you try NYU? Stern is very good in business major.

I am aware of the merit of Stern, but NYU is one of the most expensive schools in the nation. It is private and in NYC, but without the endowment of the Ivies and cost is a huge factor for me. (80-120k combined family income + a kid in college already)
Thanks for your assessment!

Bumping makes the world go round

Your stats are impressive and if you get a 2100+ SAT score I would say you have a chance at UVA. UPenn, Columbia and Harvard are reaches for anyone, because even people with 4.0 GPAs, 2400 on SAT and amazing extracurriculars get rejected.

However, realize that the common app only lets you list 10 extracurriculars …because it is not realistic to list so many. It is impossible for a high school student to manage so many activities without slacking off or lying on the application, which is why they put the limit at 10. They’d rather have someone who is passionate about a few things then all over the place in 500 things and will list anything down just to get into college. (Admissions officers are aware you cannot possibly balance all of those extracurriculars and have perfect grades, and they will tell you that at any open house… balance in extracurriculars is crucial)

Which do you think are my top ten ECs? Also can we do ECs that had ECs within them, such as my Young Entrepreneurs Club?
Thanks

You’re about a good SAT score away from being a top candidate. Also, just by presentation, your EC’s look kinda all over the place. So, really focus on common themes in your activities in your essays.

Most of my big ECs and the ones I devote the most time to are related to Economics/Business/Finance such as Gov School Humanities, Participation in Epilepsy Research Grant (doing financial analysis), Young Entrepreneurs Club ( and everything I am doing with it), Independent Studies+Final Projects on AP Macroeconomics and Managerial Economics, Internship, MUN Econ/fin committee etc.
Thanks for the feedback!

1,000+ post views! Thanks for all the feedback, it is really helping!

Hmm, you would be a very competitive applicant at probably most of these schools, however, Ivies and Wharton are reaches for everyone. I was talking with the former Vice Dean of Wharton, the acceptance rate last year was 4.6% which is lower than any other school in the nation. I think you are golden at a school like UVA though.

Wharton is certainly incredibly difficult to get into. Hopefully the fact that my courses and ECs are focused on Business/Economics will help me.
Thanks for your assessment!

A few more schools I would like to know about:
Duke
Notre Dame (Mendoza)
Carnegie Mellon (Tepper)
Cornell (Dyson)

I agree with what everyone is saying. Ivy league schools are overrated. You easily qualify for other really good schools that arent ivy league. Do some research and look to apply to them.

I have been doing research, thus my latest questions about Carnegie Mellon (Tepper), Notre Dame (Mendoza), and Duke as well as UVa in my OP
Thanks!

To bump or not to bump, that is the question…
