An Ivy coach encouraged my son to take his SAT II Subject tests June 2, 2012.
I'm wondering if this could mean they may ask him to apply early this Fall?

Background:
In March 2012 I emailed my son's junior year football highlight, transcript & SAT to all of the Ivys. 2 Ivys responded with comments about being impressed with his athleticism and his season, but only 1 Ivy followed up by:
(1) calling my son's H.S. coach
(2) mailing a hand-written letter expressing his desire to continue recruiting my son
(3) visiting our H.S. in CA to meet my son in person

Next step is my son attends the Ivy's 1-day football camp this June and we will follow-up with Senior game film of course.

My son is an AP/Honor student with a 3.7 GPA. He is taking the SAT Subject Tests June 2 and plans to retake the SAT this Oct to improve his 1st SAT of 1830. I believe he is currently in the bottom 2 tiers of the AI?

Veggie, The coach has given your son good advice and helped your son be prepared for the July 1 recruiting rush and eventual Oct/November commitments. Any Ivy that is interested in him will want to see all scores and will want a decision for ED. So, even if this isn’t the coach he ends up with, he’s prepared with the info for all others.

Can someone explain ivy ‘bands’ for admission ? I.e. score ranges that are competitive and they are determined? Are there bands for SAT1 and others for SAT2?

I’ve read that the Academic Index (AI) is calculated using GPA, SAT, SAT Subject Tests, and Class Rank. I believe the minimums for Ivy Recruits are GPA-3.4 and SAT-1740? But that would be the lowest Tier in the AI and IVYs are limited to just 2-3 athletes per year in the lowest tier.

There are several threads here with AI issues explained…and some links here on CC re AI so using the search tool you will find more.

In our experience with ivy recruiting the admissions officers like to see 700s across the board, for SAT1 sections and SAT2s. It is important for scholar-athletes to have those SATs and SAT2 scores as well as a current transcript after jr yr ready and in their possession to forward to coaches so that things are in place for July 1.
Your student must pass a pre-read with admissions before a coach can offer an OV…

YMMV given its football and the number of slots and tips is larger

Go to the AI thread and get the NY Times article regarding the AI calculation.

For a quick and pretty accurate calculation, add the math and reading SAT scores (ignore the writing score) and divide by 10, then to that sum add his CRS (Converted Rank Score) of 71 (which is the CRS that corresponds to a 3.7 GPA).

Minimum AI to be eligible for football for any Ivy is 176, but if you’re anywhere near that number you had better be a major D1 recruit.
