How important are 1st semester senior year grades ? i have around a 3.9 unweighted and 4.4 weighted average from 10th/11th & idk but my classes are a bit harder this year. i have 4 ap's & i have hard teachers. now i have 4 borderline A-/B+ grades.

bump bump bump

that wil not help or hurt. it’s a holistic process, and they mean it. your entire package, including 1st semester will be considered for admission (and later 2nd semester)

but isn’t it bad if ur grades go down…? my classes are harder this year =(

The difficulty probably will be weighed in the decision. Obviously, all A’s in AP’s is ideal (assuming nothing else changes) but it probably won’t make or break your app.

ugh…ok hope it won’t break my app cause i’m somewhat freaking out. i don’t have any other big weaknesses so i hope that this won’t hurt me that much

I’m really worried about the same thing:
my ap grades are as follows
Lit:96
Gov:94
Calc:88
Spanish:89

I’m freaking out, and I don’t know if I should drop spanish, but then I would have to notify all my schools. I could see an ivy letting 1 b+ slide, but two? I don’t know :(

They are equally if not more important than Junior year grades. That said, a couple B+'s won’t kill you. Don’t drop Spanish. One less class isn’t good and you aren’t doing THAT badly. Seriously, don’t worry.

It won’t kill you… possibly not even close… do you have excellent EC’s?

I wouldn’t call them excellent…but I’m a leader of several clubs (regional DECA president, tennis captain, mock trial captain, model un chair, strong internships)…so I’d say they’re pretty good

Wow, seems like a lot of us are on the same boat. I’m about to get a B in AP physics and I’m freaking out. Hopefully it’s true that it won’t affect my app too much.

I just found this page and I am on the same boat! Senior year, a zillion hours dedicated to extracurricular activities, 5 APs and harder classes, and I think I will be getting 3 B’s this semester… my weighted is a 4.49 and my 10-11 weighted is a 4.7… Ayy…

It’s honestly too hard to say. I think it probably depends on the applicant as well. Adcoms might overlook a slight drop in grades if the applicant is stellar in other parts of the application.

Grades are important though. From my experience, I know that as little as a week before SCEA decisions came out Harvard called/emailed my guidance counselor for my first quarter grades. So at least in my case, my grades made me. But like I said before, with holistic admissions it’s not the same for everyone.

I think they look at everything. My son has 4 AP’s and got all A’s last semester but he is realistic and knows the odds of him getting accepted are well slim to none. There are way too many kids who have done amazing things in high school besides good grade’s and test scores. If they really want you then one B isn’t going to stop them from accepting you.
