Ivy League Athletes

My D is being recruited by a number of Ivy League schools. She has been invited on 2 official visits and waiting to hear on her pre-read for a 3rd visit. My question is most schools want her to apply early decison by Nov. 1st. I believe we will qualify for some financial aid, but based on the financial aid estimators from different Ivy Schools, the difference from one Ivy school Fin. Aid Package to another can be $20,000 - $30,000 per year. My understanding is all the Ivy league schools will match one another, but you need to show evidance of the financial aid offer, and show that you were accepted. If her 1st choice wants her to apply early decision, how do you get the different financial aid offers? Should I tell the coach of her 1st choice that I want to apply to multiple schools so I can see who offers the best Financial Aid Package? My D also has athletic scholaships offers from 2 other non-Ivy schools that we need to consider.

I would ask for financial aid pre-reads at all of the non-scholarship schools. A coach should understand that it is a financial decision. We have received financial aid pre-read packets from coaches at two Ivy League schools.

The other ivies will not match HYP, which are far more generous.

Are the Ivies asking for binding early decision or non-binding early action?

You wouldn’t HAVE an official offer from any other school if your kiddo chooses to apply ED to one school. The school might consider looking at an early read from other Ivy Schools. But those are not official financial aid offers.

HYP have more generous need based aid for higher income earners than the other Ivies.

Honestly I’m not sure what to tell you. Does your daughter really WANT to commit to this ONE school and ONE coach…is she that sure this is the right place?

Perhaps other recruited athletes can comment.

Cornell and Dartmouth just announced in July 2010, that they will match all other Ivy League School’s FA packages. D was told the same by coach from Columbia. You need to show that you have been accepted and show FA packagae from other school. But very frustrating because coaches all want ED for their recruits. I guess the you have to pursue HYP as an athlete even if you are not really interested. Princeton does not look at Primary Home Equity, therefore with low income, you should qualify for a substantial package.

Brown matched HYP when D1 was a fr, but no athletics or ED involved.

Wow, great info on Cornell and Dartmouth, that’s huge. At first I thought that will cost them a fortune, then realized that few choose C or D in cross admit battle.

Unless you an athelete!
