Ivy league chances

I'm a junior at my local high school and I was wondering what my chances were for getting into an ivy league school. I'm personally a bad test taker and don't have good grades compared to the standard Ivy League Students and currently have a 3.09 uw GPA.

But, I've been great with my extra curricular activities such as competing at the national level for SkillsUSA, attending Intel ISEF, competing at HOSA, singing for an acapella group at my school, attending a week long program in Japan representing my school along with select students and much more. I'm also in the cross country/track team and ive been varsity since cross country season this school year.

But looking at my GPA, I'm worried that the Ivy League schools might not consider me. My SAT scores are below and what are my chances for that I can get in to an Ivy league school (preferably yale =P).

SAT math II 800
SAT Chem 780
SAT Bio 740
SAT Japanese 790
SAT I 790 math 530 Writing 520 Reading 8 Essay

And what do you think I should do to improve my chances. I plan on taking physics in may and retaking the SAT to improve my writing and essay score in june along with taking several APs after the ones I take this year which are AP BC calc and AP music theory.

Thanks in advance :)

Your GPA and SATs seem way too low for the Ivies. Even though your ECs might be great, it’s gonna be really hard to get in. You still have a chance, but you might want to aim a little lower.

By the way, if you want to ask about your chances post it in the “What are my Chances?” section of the forum

ya i think the SAT i can still fix right now but my GPA is a problem.
hopefully i can boost up my reading and writing score

and thanks for the tip. i think ill make a new thread there :)

for the ivys ur critical reading and writing scores are way to low… but ur clearly a very strong math science person… i would focus not on the ivys, but places like mit and cal tech… i think you would have a much better shot their than the ivys

^Not the case…

Anyways, that GPA is totally killer for your profile. EC are important, but first and foremost colleges look for applicants who have proven that they are GOOD students. If you apply with a 3.0, I would say you’ll be eliminated almost immediately, unless:
-You have a decent rank to accompany that 3.0
-Your school is nationally ranked/sends many to elite schools
-You have/will pulled in some impressive awards from SkillsUSA or Intel (have you?)

Your #1 priority needs to be getting good grades.

Honestly, you’ve got a nice profile and there are many great colleges that would LOVE to have you. You just need to set your sights lower than the ivy league.

@transfer I plan on retaking the SAT I and im studying mainly the writing and reading section hoping i can get at least 650-700+. Im mainly focusing on writing/passages instead of vocabulary since those are my “stronger” weaknesses so I thought I could get more points on it. Would you have any suggestions how I could improve my scores efficiently?

but my schools a magnet school where its really competitive, and just to show how competitive it is, the SAT I math which I got a 790 for (1 wrong) placed me in the 99th percentile for both the national and state level, but I was at the 64th percentile in my school compared to the graduating class last year. And thats how competitve my school is. And because its a magent school (I think) we don’t rank students in anyway and all our grades are kept private.

And as for competitions, I’ve gotten some significant awards like a 4000$ scholarship to NJIT, or Silver Medal for SkillsUSA. As for my grades, I’m doing much better Junior year compared to freshman and sophomore years, since 3.09 is my fresh and sophmore year gpa combined.

But its really encouraging to see positive responses from you that I’m not totally hopeless.

Thank you guys :)
