Ivy League SAT Scores

Hi guys!

On my January SAT, I got 800 on both writing and math, but unfortunately a 690 on Critical Reading. I am aiming for the Ivy League Schools, and I think my extra-curriculars are pretty strong. I am not sure if I should retake though.

My friend who's aunt is a Stanford admissions counselor says above 2250 is enough, but I am not so sure. My cumulative school is 2290.

What do you guys think? Is it worth retaking?

Thanks,
pineapple3

You’re not going to get rejected anywhere by having a 2290. It won’t get you anything automatic at an Ivy League school, but it’s not going to be the reason you don’t get in.

Congrats!!! 2290 is a great score although the CR is slightly lower. Is this your first SAT and how much is your average practice score on CR? Obviously, your only reason to retake (if you want to) is improve your CR score. For some top schools, having CR+M at 1500+ would give you better chances. You are not far away from that anyway. I think you should focus on AP and subject tests for now. If you have time in Fall between filling applications, and if your practice scores show better performance in CR, you may re-take it to further improve your chance. If this is already your second or third attempt, I would just spend the time on other areas that may help your school/scholarship applications.

I know that Harvard superscore, and 2300+ is much more shinier than a 2290.
either way, even with strong ec essay and recs you could get rejected because someone simply was a little better, isn’t it worth to put that little effort?

@yameee: Oh Harvard superscores?! this is my second SAT, on my first one i got a 710 - so my superscore would be 2310? Does Stanford super score?

@billscho: this is my second SAT :frowning: i might try to take it again in October if I’m not stressed out with college apps! i’m dedicating a lot of time to my extra curriculars and my grades

@HateBeinSober: thanks for your advice! i’m just worried my SAT score will drag me behind :|

Also, I forgot to mention that I’m Asian, if that may make a difference. My SAT twos are around 770-780

I would take it in October/November just to pull up that CR score. Not all colleges superscore, so I personally think it may be worth it if you feel that you really need that boost. Although there isn’t a HUGE difference between a 2290 and a 2350+, you’re almost there!

Retake and superscore with the new CR. Your CR skills should tend to improve with age and practice, so can probably better if you take it next year.

I honestly think a 2290 is enough for most Ivy Leagues and that you don’t need to retake it. Retaking it a 3rd time might be a little too much for some colleges(especially because your score is pretty high already) if they can see all of your past scores.

A 2290 is really good - congratulations! Test scores are really only a part of your cumulative application, so I would say it’s in your best interest to focus on having great essays, letters of rec, and ending your year strong academically.

i poop better sat scores than that

With Superscore, you are good to go. No need to retake at all. Particularly Harvard does not like 3 attempts. Stanford requires all scores but do not superscore.

lol i love how flyingpanguins says that a 2290 is good enough, even though flyingpanguins retook a 2290 themselves :3
On a sidenote, once you break 2250 and have otherwise strong grades, EC’s will matter more than a marginal difference in your SAT score. you won’t get rejected b/c of a 690 in CR, you’ll get rejected b/c of like a 3.7 unweighted or weak EC’s.
But since you got a 2290, I’m guessing that you have good grades. Since you say you have strong EC’s, all its gonna take you is good essays and you’re pretty much going to get into most of the colleges you want to go to.
Good luck!

@collegeleggo I have a 2230 superscored. Do you think they’d care?

@diddly123 i thought you “pooped better sat scores than” a 2290. What’s with your 2230? But yeah, @pineapple3, try again just for reading. If you manage to improve by just 20 or 30 points, it’s good enough and worth it. Getting over the 2300 hurdle is the biggest problem. After a score of 2300, it all counts as the same.
