Current School: Top 50 National University
Major: History
Last Semester: 3.87 - all upper Divisions
This Semester: All upper Divisions once again
Honors: Dean's List, many more from H.S, University Honors Program
Reason for attending School: A lot of community service opportunities down here
Reasons for needing to transfer: Dependent on Parents still - about to lose his job - like to be closer for less expenditures - also looking for a more academically stable climate. At 22, the college scene is far past me.
Age: 22
High School: (2004 - wow long ago :( lol top 1/5 3.6 gpa 3.8 weighted - don't even remember my SAT's - nothing spectacular)
Hooks: First generation to attend college, life changing experience

Reason for not attending college right after H.S: My best friend killed her best friend in a drunk driving accident. Had a significant impact on my life, spent the last four years traveling the country, taking a series of jobs, looking for some supernatural meaning to life. It's a LONGGG and interesting story, but nevertheless I found what I was looking for, got things back together last April in my life, and now I'm at my Top 50. :) However, things have popped up, and need to transfer. Anyone think I got a shot at any ivy, gtown, or chicago?

from what i have seen, colleges like to see that you can handle a rigorous courseload in the near past.

infinitely more experience can be gained from traveling and working than most kids ever get in 4 years of college. Every school is looking for a diverse pool of students.

Have you looked at Columbia GS?

nyu, gtown, villanova sound great for you, especially if you ever decide to turn that major into a JD. apply to some ivy’s also for a possible shot, too.

being diverse does not mean spending a year taking siestas in spain because one must “recuperate.” being diverse means working hard, having a passion of some sort, having a talent of some sort, and dedication for what you love and/or would like to do. what does that say for the people who put up with the monotony and drudgery of school everyday who work hard and do the right thing? or when some people arent financially sound to go off to other countries to find one’s self? i think we all would like to party in other countries for some time, but there is a thing in life called priorities.

To be fair, he never said he was travelling to exotic countries…in fact it says that he staying in THIS country, working. I don’t know how you translated that into “taking siestas in Spain.”

LOL wow collegebound ahahahaha.

However, part of collegebound’s comment is sound–you’re competing with people who have been working the entire time. For that reason, I would just aim a bit lower. Cross out the ivies; put in more safeties.

your intense life experience could be explained in the admissions essay. best of luck. your gpa is great btw.

do not listen to these bitter people. honestly, show your passion, maturity, and drive in your essays. i don’t think you are less qualified than anyone else.

georgetown is transfer friendly. chicago is possible if you have compelling essays.

certainly, it is better for you to do some “dicking around” than to spout some hateful nonsense on some discussion board.

apply to as many ivies as you want; it’s your money and time.

best of luck!

<i didn’t come out bitter. bc i’m not. and i never applied/cared to apply to an ivy.

I didn’t mention anything along the lines that I was out “partying,” I said I was out and about in this world working. And no, I wasn’t in another country, I was in the continuous United States. And no, I didn’t have money, that’s why it’s called WORKING. And for your information, I wasn’t a partier in high school, I did my work, did what I had to do, and other than my senior year I could have gone to my fair share of Top 50’s even before hand. I had something unfortunate happen, and it affected me tremendously, and I am not looking for sympathy I’m just telling the situation. People respond in different ways to certain things, and that’s how I chose to respond. Quit painting this image of some spoiled brat with money who traveled around this country and abroad on Mommy and Daddy’s dime, that’s not the case. You think I didn’t give a little bit of thought, beforehand, that I might be up against a pretty sick applicant pool of students who hadn’t messed up?? There was a lot to this country I wanted to see, a lot I wanted to figure out, before I started out on a path of doing something. So I left, traveled, and W-O-R-K-E-D. I didn’t take siestas, stay in fancy hotels, I usually stayed on couches of friends, relatives, just figuring stuff out, trying to make a buck, live, and see life for itself. I wasn’t going to start university life on the wrong foot and confused. Don’t sit here and under mind my potential because I chose a different route to college.

To all of you who responded, thank you, been out of the whole process for quite sometime now, so I appreciate your comments. Wish all of you good luck as well, if you’re all thinking about transferring.

You have a great shot at some top schools, but do a bit more research first. Narrow down your list; applying to “any ivy” is silly as they all have different academic philosophies and some (Princeton) don’t even accept transfers.

Don’t listen to collegeboundkid, he’s a bitter philistine who doesn’t appear to appriciate anything besides archetypal grade whoring.

womanoftroy- i wasn’t referring to you; i didn’t think i needed to clarify.

also, just to point out, the op was talented/smart/accomplished enough to get into a top 50 university anyway…its not like he’s an acadmic failure looking to jump to the ivy league, just someone who took a different path to college.

YALE. apply to YALE. yea the acceptance is…almost 0%, BUT they love the atypical student. It doesn’t matter if you went and traveled or worked or whatever as long as YOU think it was a productive use of your time, and if you can express what you said ^ up there into an awesome essay, then by all means go for it cause you’ll have a good shot. oh and you’ll also have to convince them Yale is the place you want to be and why Yale has to have you. they don’t even care about your activities, unless you mention something in your essays. it’s ALL essays and teacher recommendations (and to a certain extent the GPA) but they take liberties/risks with their transfer kids, it’s often times on a whim that the admissions board will accept/reject you, cause it won’t show up in their overall statistics. show you’re unique.

not everyone has a clear path to college. i’m sure thats not how your narrow-mind interprets this situation.

i hope the mod kicks you

Aww Collegeboundkid, you’re a bitter bitter person. Geez, let me guess, are you the weird kid in the back of the class, who every one makes fun of? Do you have a hard time making friends? Are you just bitter and hate the world? Go ahead, make your smart ass remarks, and no, I didn’t bus tables, I worked for Continental Airlines, who sent me to each different city every year.
So, did I hold a job, yes I did, and my base city changed every year. What, do you have something smart to say about working for airlines? You envy me, you know it. Don’t worry, I’m sure college will get better for you.
