Yes i hope to improve my sats on this upcoming one and if not i’ll probably go lower! Not all the highest are on my list but the higher up you go, more financial aid is offered so that’s another reason. But most of the ones i choose all do mathematics because it’s a major subject so that’s what i looked into! Not hooked at all. Um im unsure of this first generation thing? I was born in india but then lived in new zealand, california, then canada. But it has all been because of jobs, not because i’m wealthy. I’ll change it up and make another post after i’ve done more research and organized everything.
When that article hit CC, I tore it apart. Don’t believe everything you see, especially a one-shot reviewer who admits she didn’t get it.
No, in itself, that trip shouldn’t impress, as in roll over and bow down. In holistic, they don’t stop at any one line on the app.
You really need to read what the colleges say, strawberriess. Or you’re, so to say, shooting in the dark. It’s not where you lived, it’s first gen to go to college. Or, your parents didn’t complete college. Or. You have to see how the college defines it.
And please, take your time revising this. You have a lot in there that will not be strategic.
I’m glad you said that, because my overseas trip won’t even be in my application. It’s just more for myself, but many people don’t see it that way so thank you!
Hahah, i wanted to apply to UC’s but i know some people who go there and they have more financial need than me but got around 1/3
ahh yes @TomSrOfBoston hopefully my hardwork can pay off!
Hahah, i wanted to apply to UC’s but i know some people who go there and they have more financial need than me but got around 1/3 of it actually met** so that’s off my list. Even thought they’re pretty awesome schools i have to say. But hey, you got to do what you got to do
After spending a while in these kinds of forums, I realize something that is probably common knowledge for the average ad officer. When a kid lists an insane amount of EC is because she/he is trying to draw attention from test scores or academics.
Like lawyers say “if the law is on your favor, argue the law; if the facts are on your favor, argue the facts”
Admission to highly selective colleges is not about one or the other; it’s about ONE AND THE OTHER
You also have to understand that many, if not most, of the unhooked applicants to the most competitive universities in the US are at the very top of their class. While it is better than not being at the top, that alone does not guarantee admission. By first gen, they mean will you be the first in your family to attend university. Also it is important whether or not you will be applying as an international. If you are applying as a domestic student, what is your state of residence?
Yeah true, its holistic! Oh then no i am not the first generation.
I reside in canada since grade 9-12
but i lived in California for 6 years so I became a us citizen.
what would be the best way to apply for this situation?
Because i am no longer living in California, am i basically an international even though i have us citizenship?
I believe you would be applying as an international, which means that there are very few schools which will meet 100% of your financial need. And I don’t mean to sound harsh, but you really, really need to expand your search. Are you currently applying or will you be doing so next year?
Maybe because we don’t have AP classes it may seem so but my classes are so hard. All the sciences especially. I have always had straight A’s even in California, I definitely have had to work really hard to keep my grades up, especially this year. But i guess universities can’t really know that so i would have to prove it by raising my SAT score.
Thank you to everyone btw, your comments have all been helpful!
I am a US citizen and i have my friend whose sister and brother both going to usa school, one is USC which is high and gave a lot of financial aid, actually the most out of all so she chose that one, she only pays around $6000 dollars so mine will be in that range as we are similarly financially needed and both came from canada and both us citizens! Thank you though @ClarinetDad16
Yes, but as it stands now FA is a moot point because you don’t appear to be competitive for the schools you listed. If you want to attend school in the US, you need to broaden your range. Know that if you are claiming California residency, state universities elsewhere will not award you aid.
