Ivy Leagues

:) thank you for your kind words, my parents are saying literally, the exact opposite of what you're saying, not exactly supportive

can someone answer my hook question? id really appreciate it. thank you :)

Normal hooks are URM, recruited athlete and high donating legacy.

Some of the more unusual ones are 1. being VERY good at an instrument (I know of one person who played at Carnegie Hall, that would definately be a hook) 2. Some type of national award

basically anything in an area that shows you are extremely talented in something... Not school awards, like national level awards.

But of course, nothing is guarenteed. Especially with HYP.

it's very hard for OOS students to get into Berkeley, because the UCs are for a large part
numbers based. Look up how they calculate the numbers for the cutoff for OOS students... I don't remember the exact numbers but I do know that the numbers for in-state students are around 200+ for Berkeley but the highest an out of state student can get is around half that. I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's how the UC system works. You never know though, give it a try.

In addition, don't get caught up in the CC mentality of brand names. Are you sure HYP is what you want? Do more research and see what type of schools fit YOUR personality and apply to schools that do that. There are people who attend HYP and are miserable because sure it has prestige, but the school isn't a good fit. Same if you attend NYU or an UC, there's always a possibility that behind the brand name, you discover you don't truly like the school. Best of luck.

that's the thing. like i love harvard, which sucks cuz i have no chance, then I like all these other schools that i won't get into. oh well, hopefully i'll figure it out soon

would starting a program to help spanish speakers in the community be considered a hook?

There's more than one Ivy League?

huh? would that count as a hook?

He is talking about your topic's title, Ivy LeagueS.

okay, well for ALL ivy leagues, would they consider starting that program a hook?

Hook, as explained above, are generally only athlete/legacy/URM. You're an URM which is already a huge hook.

Sorry, I wasn't clear.
There is only one Ivy LeagUE.
There are no Ivy LeagueS.
There are different universitiES, that are members of Ivy LeaguE :)

Hey, Alone, you've just contradicted yourself. The answer to the question, "Are there any Ivy Leagues?" is "Yes, there is one Ivy League".
Clearly the OP is using the phrase "Ivy Leagues" as shorthand for "Ivy League Universities" -- a fairly common and accepted usage, IMHO.

so if i would put that on my app, would they just think of that as leadership? and nothing else?

what does URM stands for?

under represented minority.

Ford, by 'no Ivy LeagueS' I meant no plural of the league :)

still no answer...umm... could i get one?

guess not....

they'd think of it as leadership and initiative to go out, recognize a problem, and do something within ur ability to solve that problem. it's a great idea. do it if u have the time and means to do so. stuff like that makes the adcom remember u more than someone else whos just all school oriented and stuff. the kind of thing u r considering doing is a lot more memorable and significant than "quiz bowl champion" or something any other ivy league applicant will have on their application.

p.s. yankees suck
