ivy recruiting for male fencing?hey

Hey guys!
im interested in fencing in college, I fence for a local club and am a captain there. However, I am not ranked. However, I have a 4.0 and a 33, so im not entirely sure how this works.
In any case, if im unranked, will the ivies look at me? Could someone explain fencing recruiting to me? Thanks!

Hey Staryulover,
You’ll want to talk to sherpa- here’s the benchmark thread on this subject:

Thanks riverrunner! I’ll send a PM for sure!

Meanwhile, can someone give me any advice? Am I beyond recruit-able for the ivies?

If you are talking about ratings as in “A” “B” etc., and you are a ‘U’, no, you will not be recruitable anywhere. Ivies pretty much won’t look unless you are “A” rated and/or up on the Points List. My son was/is a “B” and he would not have been recruited by the Ivies. As it was, he had no interest in the Ivies so we did not really try. Some D3 programs at other top schools recruit B/C fencers which is the direction we went.

^ I concur, to a point. Surely not recruitable at a strong D1 program, but possibly recruitable at a strong academics, competitive admissions, weaker fencing college. Vassar, Lafayette, and Haverford come to mind.

Your challenge will be to convince the coaches that you’re a good fencer. Are you? No national ranking isn’t a big problem. No USFA rating (you didn’t say, but I’m assuming so) would be a bigger problem. Hopefully you have some strong competitive results. If you’re good enough to contribute to a team and can prove so to a coach, you can probably be recruited somewhere.

Good luck.
