For top teir colleges, let's discuss if you should retake or not.

I'd "probably" retake my 2290, if it wasn't for my spread (800M, 800CR, 690W). If I had more accross the board scores or a lower CR, I def would, but since only my writing score suffered, I don't think I am going to.

Usually retake a 2290? Ah, you're very lucky - you have the 1600 and then the 690 writing, a score which many colleges are taking with a very large, very heavy grain of salt. (But why would you retake a 2290 in the first place?)

I was planning on not retaking, but I was talking to an MIT guy at a college fair and he basically said that I should at least get my SAT I Math (700) up to a 730, and that the 800IIC doesn't help because it tests knowledge, not reasoning. I guess I'm retaking my 2160 then.

Wow, zoogies, sat math measures nothing. Nothing. My friend, who got a 780 in math, had no mathematical depth and little true ability... she used flashcards to study for tests... and she would have trouble with any "higher" concepts.
SAT Critical reading, in fact, is supposed to measure your ability for higher level math much better than the SAT math. In my opinion, the whole test in general measures very little...

I am not retaking (2270)
700 math
770 writing (12 essay)
800 CR

--IF YOU ARE IN THE RANGE DON'T RETAKE! you'll be wasting your life- you could do so many better things with that time. It won't help your chances either, and may hurt--

someone posted here that the SAT Math is becoming more and more like the Math IC and I think that's true. It seems to be testing knowledge of basic geometry/ algebra concepts - not reasoning as much as it used it. Getting rid of the Quantitative section (the one with the columns, i think that's what they're called) was probably a mistake.

As for my score...2200; retaking not because I really need to (I have 770,770 on the old SAT so at least at the top schools, I should be covered) but because I feel like I could have done SO much better.

Ildjing, I know, but I was practically told by a rep in the admissions dept. of my first choice school that my SAT I math wasn't up to par. As much as I hated sitting through four hours of SAT testing the first time around, I know I can do better, and apparently I need to do better as well. A 700 would probably be in the lowest quadrant at MIT. I'm going to have to way this guy's opinion fairly heavily.

Yeah, exactly. I have that feeling too. Oh and hey, did you get picked up from the RSI waitlist?

it was horrific trying to tell my mom about the SAT score; she expected so much more as did my guidance counselor. And I admit, I barely had time to practice before the test, so I'm going to study hard during the summer and do fantabulous in october.

as for RSI..no, never got pulled off the waitlist. Never even got a letter telling me the final decision. I figure that's the least they could do after giving us so much hope by waitlisting us. Not to mention there ARE only 15 or so people who would need those final letters in the first place, but no...sighh...:(
oh well...I might just put "selected as an alternate for Research Science Institute" or something on the MIT application (I've fallen in love with that school!). I don't know yet.

The problem is that we're all in love with it. As for miricle - what do you think? I retook my 790 M, 740 CR and improved quite a bit - if those CR/M scores CAN become near 800's and the writing can get above 740, retake by all means.

Ah, and just the other day I was caught red-handed using "between" for more than two people.

Hehe, I would suggest turning this thread into an MIT fanthread, but I don't think people would appreciate that. Yeah, if you've got over a 2250 I hardly see the reason for retaking.

But why? They're at the 750+ mark. Would this even matter to colleges?

I'm thinking about retaking my 2230 (800M, 730CR, 700W) because I tanked on the essay (know I can do much better) and am not satisfied with CR.

I'm applying to MIT, Princeton, Caltech, Stanford, and safeties.

I want to retake my 2130
CR-800, M-700, W-630 :(
my writing and my CR are soooo different! but i've already retaken the new SATs once so a third time might be too excessive...don't know what to do
