Would it be worth it to name an Ivy League school as one of your top two choices? I have heard that Ivys do not give any benefits to someone who does so. So, would I be better served to choose two non-Ivys even if an Ivy would otherwise be in my top two? Thanks!

bigboy4…Naming an Ivy League school as one of your 2 schools of interest wouldn’t do anything for you. The only thing naming schools at this point does for you is show interest in a particular school, so you’d be better suited listing a couple of schools that you might be interested in that offer NMF money. Even if you’re looking at them as financial safeties, expressing interest to a school that might offer you money will net you more than telling an Ivy. They get so many top level applicants that NM status doesn’t carry a ton of weight with them.

Ok thanks. Thats what I was thinking.

My D listed 2 schools that offered big NMF money. She was later accepted at all three Ivies she applied to. She decided to attend a school with a full ride NM scholarship and two study abroad opportunities. She will possibly look into Ivies for grad. school. Good luck, this form helped us a great deal in this new process.

Some school might offer you a waiver of application fee if you list them as the top 2 choices. I heard Rice is one of those schools.

It is a confusing process because you are to list first choice school before you know where you are accepted. BUT IT CAN BE CHANGED. I agree with prior posts, it does not make sense to list a school that does not give a NMS. Pick your first choice among the schools that do give scholarships. BUT you can change prior to April 26 (in 2011 anyway). My S applied to Vanderbilt (which gives a $5,000 NMS) and Wash U (which gives a $2,000 NMS). He put Vanderbilt prior to March 1 since it paid more and he didn’t know where he would be accepted. He was accepted to both but chose Wash U. The NMS materials say first choice can be changed up until April 26. He faxed a change to Wash U on April 25 and received notice today that he was getting the $2,000 (for each year) scholarship for Wash U.

By the way, for those of you who do not know, USC gives a $20,000 NMS, the most for any top school. My S was accepted there as well, but we gave up that money because he preferred Wash U.

I think there is some confusion here.

What the OP (opening poster) was asking about was the two choices for notifying them of your interest. OP has not been notified that he is a semi finalist.

Your S is further along in the process and how to make the final choice is a strategic decision that has been discussed a lot in other threads. The OP is still in the first stage (he will apply for colleges next year) and you cannot change the two choices. In all reality, it does not matter what those two choices are.

Also, yes USC gives half tuition to NMS, which is about $20,000 but there is still a gap of of about $35,000 as their COA is around $55,000. There is whole thread on NM scholarships and the best is U of Alabama which gives a full ride (worth more than $40,000).

Yes, the 2 schools chosen now for the class of 2012 CAN be changed… up until May 25th. S just changed his :-).

so does it help or factor into the admission chances in anyway to list a school as one of the two choices at this point? (letters just received for class of 2012?)

In some schools it might, in the top schools it will not.
