Which of these should I get? Wouldn't Microsoft Office be more convenient? Or is iWork just as good?

Get NeoOffice and be done with it.

NeoOffice Home

Get Microsoft Office. Otherwise, you'll be struggling with it every single time you have to use a school computer, since they completely changed the interface in Office 2007. It's become much better, but it takes some getting used to if you haven't worked on it for a long time.

I agree. In terms of campadability, Office would be a better choice for sharing documents.

I suggest Microsoft Office--Especially for the compatibility with emailing documents from your Mac to a PC which is essential in college.

Microsoft Office is definitely the better choice as your professors and classmates will most likely be using Office too.

The free Office-like products just aren't up to par. I tried using OpenOffice's powerpoint competitor and you could just tell that Microsoft PowerPoint had better quality in terms of overall features.

def microsoft office. many colleges have the latest version of office for both pcs and macs in their libraries or computer helpdesks, and you can install it for free too!

An easy solution here is to go with iWork, because, especially for presentations, one can change the format when it's done. A Keynote presentation will always look smoothest and best in general, and is easily exported as a Quicktime movie. A Pages doc becomes a PDF when needed to print somewhere. It's amazing.

You can do that in Office as well.

With the freeware version of CutePDF Writer, you can do that with ANY program.

CutePDF - Create PDF for free, Free PDF Utilities, Save PDF Forms, Edit PDF easily.

It gets installed as a printer in your computer. Whenever you want to make a PDF, just print the document and choose the PDF printer.

there is also an MS Office license that lets you put it on 3 different computers. So if you or your family or friends have other desktops/laptops who might need MS Office, that can also be a factor to consider.

wait so if you have office for windows you can put it on a mac for free?

Does anyone recommend buying both, since some say iWork works more smoothly and is better for presentations and Office is much more convenient?

I don't see why you would buy both - I'm just gonna get office for my mac and be done with it.

office is more convenient and more popular, i'd say forget about iwork.

Office. iWork sucks :(

Just one example: in Numbers(Apple's version of excel), you cannot change the width of an individual cell aside from merging two cells together. This was hell when I had to make my transcript last week for my college app.

iWork...Microsoft Office is a bit slow

Don't go cheap on something like this. It can be a great pain; just get office and e done with it. There's some sort of big discount microsoft is giving on aug. 20. Check out some of the other threads for the link.

The discount, i think, is only for the windows version. Get office 08, you don't want compatibility issues, even though iwork exports and imports office documents. Better to be absolutely sure, than sorry. Although, office 08 has gotten pretty bad reviews.

Eh, I got iWork. I won't be doing anything hugely important or anything, and I can export stuff in Windows format so I don't have much to worry about there. Plus I saved like 50 bucks so I'm happy :P
