J-School Prospective Students

Hey,

I'm sitting and waiting for my acceptance letters for J-School and I wanted to know if any of you had received a nod or a rejection from any. Also, if you can rate my chances that would be awesome.

I applied to
- Columbia University
- NYU
- CUNY NYC
- Berkeley
- USC

I've got a low GPA (3.387), but decent GREs and a really good resume - I haven't graduated undergrad at UCLA, but I'm working as an Editorial Intern for Entertainment Weekly and a writer at the LA Times, plus I've done work for the travel section of the Today show, run a website, extensive online knowledge, staff on Daily Bruin, etc. On top of that I'm double majoring and minoring (Comm and Poli Sci, Film minor).

What do you guys think? I know I got into CUNY.

I'm not an expert by any means on this but your work/internship experience makes it sound like you have a good shot at all of them. You didn't give your GRE scores, but if they are really good it sounds like you'll do fine. At least you know you already have somewhere to go! Congrats

it's hard to say. i applied for journalism schools last year. columbia, nyu, northwestern, berkeley, boston u, and ubc. got in everywhere but berkeley.

a friend of mine also got into columbia and decided to go there (i decided not to go, long story you don't need to hear). he had a strong GPA (probably 3.7), no GRE scores (columbia doesn't require them so he didn't send them), but his resume wasn't so shiny. editor of his school paper's comments section and an occasional blogger for a barely-trafficked toronto blog.

i'd say you're probably on par with him. your resume sounds more solid but his grades were higher. j-schools aren't as obsessed with GPA as some other places. they care more about your writing samples and your resume, so i'd say you have a shot. NYU is definitely within reach, probably USC too. maybe columbia, but the numbers might hurt you. i can't really speak to berkeley because i don't know what they're looking for, but if you're a resident of california that will be a leg up on the competition.

good luck!
