Jack Kent Cooke 2017-2018 Undergrad Transfer

Hey guys never count yourself out, I felt like I lost but it took a while for my school to notify me. I just found out recently that I won.

It’s hard reading this forum probably not healthy for your mental health. However, never doubt yourself. I was reading a couple of these posts the last couple of days and i know you guys felt the same : defeated, hurt, and desperate for an answer.

I am sure that you guys will look back and realize how indeterminate this is to your future. Pick a direction you want to head in your life and don’t stop for anything!

@museofadvent congrats! I will just assume I didn’t get it so I am not disappointed at the end of the month. I am a single mother that works full time, so although I have a great resume and grades, I did not have any honors course which likely automatically counts me out.

I believe rejection emails started going out this morning. I got mine a couple minutes ago  Not totally upset, this just means I can say yes to the job I was offered (had I received the scholarship, I would’ve rejected the job offer since it pays too much to be eligible for financial need).

Congrats to the winners!! And good luck to everyone on your future endeavors

I just received an email from the foundation as well. I didn’t receive the scholarship. I want to congratulate all of the finalists and wish you all many future successes. However I also want to congratulate all semifinalists for making it this far. You should all be proud!

I received the rejection email today. Oh well. I’m not going to get too hung up on it because at least now it makes it clear I should choose the college option that will leave me with significantly less debt.

@ brokenbeauty, um don’t count yourself out just yet. I am a mom as well, and I have a learning disability. I also have 4.0 and have been in thehonors program at my cc. So perfect gpa and honors doesn’t mean you have better chances

I was also notified that I did not receive the scholarship - @philbegas, I will choose to attend the college option that will leave me with less debt, too. It is one that I was interested in before learning about JKC. I am right there with you, it is a mixed bag of emotions. Everything is uncertain currently, but I have faith that we will end up at the institutions we were meant to attend and that we will succeed there. I know for sure that more doors will open for all of us as we take this next step. I believe!

It has been such an honor and joy to get to know all of you through this forum. To finalists and semifinalists alike: congratulations! I have no doubt that each one of us will continue to make a positive impact on the world. This award is prestigious and life-changing. Recipients of this award have exemplified astounding academic success and perseverance in the midst of tremendous obstacles. All of us have so much to be proud of.

I’m very grateful that the JKC Foundation shares scholarship opportunities with students each year. I hope that everyone graduating this semester enjoys the next few weeks. I pray that my application and semi-finalist status encourages future students at my CC to consider Jack Kent Cooke! If you’re reading this and feel unsure about applying - go for it! No matter the result, you will learn so much about yourself and how you’d like to shape your future. Good luck to all!

I’m assuming the notifications are being sent out in waves? I checked my regular inbox and spam folder this morning and haven’t come across any recent emails regarding the scholarship. I’ll check again tomorrow morning. I’m 99% certain that I’m not a finalist this year, but some closure would be nice.

Thanks for that post. You should definitely encourage other students at your CC to follow your lead!

@CourtneyThurston Does the JKCF notify colleges of the winners? If not, should I notify them or is it too late?

They do not notify the colleges you’re considering transferring to, no. Just your community college.

Hi Fellow JKC Semifinalists! I have been reading this thread for some time. I also got the kindest rejection email from the JKC scholarship. I am a very proactive student when it comes to scholarships & I won a few from my college. We are all deserving & have been chosen for a reason even if it just the semifinalist status. Although the news was not the “winner news”, I was not as sad because I have applied to a big scholarship designed for students like myself that I know I have more chances of winning since I mentor their scholars. I definitely took advantage of the semifinalist status & listed it there as one of my accomplishments, so I am beyond grateful for the semifinalist title. My resume is glowing! I applied to about 34-41 ($500-$5,000) scholarships at my local college. So I will definitely reach my goal for financial aid. I have always been a planner. I had a plan for UC, Cal State, and privates. Although I will not be attending my dream private college (I’ll go there for grad school haha), I will be attending a cal state college I ended up loving & was not listed in my application. I visited the campus after I applied for JKC. I live far from my family & they are all from the bay area (norcal). I can now look towards moving there, having more opportunities, & spend more time with family. More connections since my family are all in the med field. You can still do well whether you attend a fancy college or a simple state college. It is what you do in the college that matters. So I want to share some positive vibes! When God closes one door, God opens another! Dream Big, Work Hard, & Achieve. You can still live the JKC motto. Once you become successful, which I know most of you will be because this was the best of the best undergraduate students in the nation who competed for this, I am sure you will also start a small scholarships & help another! We can still meet the JKC chosen scholars in the future. It might even be in the work environment, but regardless, keep thriving & keep working hard! Let this be a black coal that lights a passionate fire in you. Thank you for all your kind & encouraging words! xx

Proactive in scholarships* I mean :stuck_out_tongue:

My comment got deleted :’( So I will try to write it again. TSK! Sorry, I just made one so I can leave a message to all of you amazing students.

First of all, I wanted to say hello to all the Semifinalists & congtrats to the winners! I received the kindest JKC rejection email today. It was actually very sweet. They have done so much for me. JKC connected me to good colleges & I used the semifinalist title like a boss lol. My resume is glowing & I used it for another big scholarship that I know I have more chances of winning because I mentor their scholars. I applied to about 31-40 scholarships at my local community college while waiting on the JKC results. Basically, I applied like the proactive scholarship hunter I was born to be lol. I was not as sad to read the rejection because I have been proactive & I will be reaching my financial aid goals due to this. It would have been awesome to be part of the JKC scholars, but when God closes one door… God opens another! I had a plan for UC, Cal States, & Private colleges. Although I will not be attending my dream private college (I will instead attend there for grad school haha), I will be attending either the awesome UC in the bay area wink or the Cal State college I fell in love with after visiting. It was not listed in my JKC app since I visited later on, but it is near my family. I live on my own (rent a room to be exact) just so I can attend my cc. Now I can move in the bay area. More connections, family is there, and they all work in the med field. So you can say regardless, we must not forget we are all blessed. I am sure all of you will do amazing (semifinalists & finalists combined) because you are th best of the best undergraduate students in the nation  Keep thriving & remember… Dream Big, Work Hard, & Achieve. You can still live the JKC motto. May this become a black coal that lights up a fire of passion towards your dreams! It is not where you go, it is what you do. And you never know you will meet the chosen JKC scholars in a work environment after you have all succeeded in achieving your dreams. Sometimes life takes us to a detour, but there is more than one way to achieve a task, a goal, and a dream.

Thank you for all the kind words & encourgement! xx

Just to add, I have won scholarships. Small ones that add up all together. Those 31-40 scholarships range from $500 - $3,000! And at my college there have been students who have won 10 since it is one essay for all scholarships available. I love my cc! Definitely research opportunities & other scholarships. I am the lead for hunting scholarships at my work & I work for my college. I am also in charge of marketing & designing scholarships. Keep working hard & never give up! Be a planner & an executer. I believe in all of you. I want to send good vibes! Do not forget to research! There are many scholarships out there I am not even kidding. Once you add them up, you will be surprised!

Sorry guys for spamming. It was acting up and it deleted my comment, so I tried to re-write it with effort. My apologies!

So I just received a call from the foundation informing me that I AM A FINALIST! They had issues with contacting my community college and their patience finally ran out by today. I was one of the last students to be notified!

I counted myself out days ago and could barely breathe when the adviser on the line told me that she wanted to make my weekend better. It took all of my strength to not fall to my knees in the library.

@Moonlight9 my comment was deleted too, so wrote it twice - double the emphasis! Tried to rewrite as best I could. Have a great weekend, all!

@mat2155528 congrats and way to go

@mat2155528 Congratulations! A difficult wait, you stuck it through - a phenomenal start to the weekend! Well deserved!
