Just out of curiosity, is anyone here applying to the JAX SSP this year (or has attended in previous years)? It's not particularly well known, but it seems excellent and looks to be extremely competitive.

I sent my application in a while back, and am somewhat nervous about cogency about my personal narrative. Anyone care to share their stats, insight, or opinions?

Yeah I applied. HS senior, white male. 2380 sat/3*800 subject test. 4.0UW, ~4.4? weighted. Accepted caltech EA but deferred mit, if that’s any indication of stats. Honors list chem olympiad (top 150), no other major awards (and that’s not even major). A little programming experience in python, but I said i wanted to get lab experience, and if I’m not doing computer work knowing python is no plus. I had a research internship last summer doing computer simulations and a (presumably) good letter of rec from my mentor. No previous lab-research experience. Some leadership in scouts (eagle scout)/FIRST Robotics/science bowl/programming club/marching band. My personal statement I didn’t spend too long on, content was ok but writing itself was pretty bland (not at all inspirational)-- if profs read it they’ll think its fine and like my other stats I think, but it won’t stand out to the initial selection comittee. No idea if I’ll get in. I think my app will be competitive, but they only take ~10hs and 2/3 of accepted are females, so I won’t be at all surprised if I’m rejected.

What are your stats? You know anybody who attended? It looks like a nice setup (free room/board I think, +$3600) and good research, and it’s nice all the interns live together (not like nih where housing is on your own-- honestly, the best part of my internship last summer was the other interns, and having a group-oriented program is a big plus. I’m saying this as a workaholic and nerd.) I’m opting to a shotgun approach to apps this year, applying more places but spending less time on each app-- honestly I’m sick of apps after applying to 15 schools (last year I applied 5 internships, got into only 1, but my app will be much stronger this year, although I’ll be competing with undergrads too…)

That is long and messy, but it’s CC, so who cares?

Oh also, after submitting your app did you see the screen that said “be sure to submit your cover letter via email?” What is that? I submitted 2 days ago, and have emailed and asked, and the person said “it’s a word doc with your name and phsycial address and email address on it.” Do they really want a doc with JUST that on it, after I filled out all that stuff on my online app? Or do they want a legit cover letter, in ADDITION to the 3-page online narrative? Or is that part BS that we don’t have to worry about?

This is unrelated, but are you applying to clark scholars? Do we list awards and more test scores in teh “activities” section, since there’s nowhere to list them elsewhere? Listing them in the essay section would make no sense.

HS Junior, overseas American. 3.9 unweighted GPA, which is pretty competitive for an IB Diploma student (school doesn’t weight). Taking the SAT this month (they said it was okay to send in scores late), no subject test scores. Interned at a biotech company this year, but it wasn’t an research thing, mostly just learning how to operate devices. A fair deal of volunteering and tutoring, but nothing spectacular. Personal statement was decent. Recs should be excellent: my teachers love me. ^^

I’m pretty sure the cover letter is supposed to be an actual cover letter, not just basic profile information; it would be pointless otherwise. I sent in a resume as well.

Actually, cover letter really is just name etc.

I asked:

"Hello again,

I would like to make sure I understand you correctlythe cover letter is a word document with JUST our name, physical address, and email (ie what I have attached)?

Or do you want a traditional cover letter, ie a one-page statement of why we would like to attend the Jackson Lab Summer Student Program, that also includes our name/address/email?

Or is the cover letter already included in the online application I have submitted for the Summer Student Program, on which I uploaded a 3-page personal narrative?

Thank you for the clarification!"

(My attachment had my name, address, and email)

Her reply:

“Hi X,
What you attached is correct. Thanks. I will add it to your folder.
Regards,
Lisa”

Lolz, no idea why they wanted that… but I’m sure they’ll be ok with an actual cover letter :0

Yeah, for clark scholars, I listed more test scores/awards/summer activities below activities in the activities section. I don’t think they care too much where we put the info…

Okay, so did anyone receive a confirmation email after they sent in their cover letter? Not after the actual application, I got that one, but did you recieve a response from summerstudents@jax.org after the final piece was emailed?

I didn’t receive a confirmation so I emailed them and he said they received my app.

Stats: high school junior, 4.0 uw, 4.2 weighted. Paid intern at a soy database company in partnership w/ UCB, paid math tutor at Kumon, founder and president of red cross club, science bowl team, volunteer at convalescent hospital, also talked a little about piano/being a paid piano teacher, also leadership in some other clubs. Attended CTY Genetics, learned some lab stuff there. EPGY Physics, summer research internship in Thailand last summer, learned a bunch of LAN techniques there.

2190 SAT, 222 PSAT.

I thought my personal statement was decent and the answers to the questions were pretty good. The blurb things about who I’d want to work with were rushed though… meh.

I wrote a whole cover letter and added it to my resume… Oh well.

I already applied to Rockefeller’s science internship. I didn’t do Clark, but I have 5 more apps to send out over the next few weeks. Honestly, if I got anything I would be ecstatic, but Jackson is by far my top choice.

I’ve applied to Jackson, Simons, Rockefeller, SIMR, City of Hope, and Clark Scholars. Jackson’s also 1st choice for me, but really, any of these would be great.

@shadowyams
I got into COH last year as a sophomore. I couldn’t go because of the housing (or lack thereof), so if you decide to pick COH and turn down your other options, make sure your parents are okay with you living in Duarte, CA and commuting to a hospital. Mine were not. ):

Yeah, I have connections in CA, and my parents are generally okay with me living in at a friend’s house/apartment. Of course, free housing would be nice, which makes JAX all the more awesome. :D

At any rate, SAT scores came out, and mine are really lopsided. Full score on the reading, 770 on math (2 mistakes D:) and 700 writing. Hopefully they’re old-fashioned and will look at CR+M only. :D
