True, thanks for being optimistic, @litotes. :)

Just out of curiosity, have all of you had previous research experience? I applied, but I have never worked in a lab before so I’m wondering if I even stand a chance. I suppose I’ll find out soon enough.

I’ve been working in a neuroscience lab for about two years on my own project. However, I’m not sure if this is advantageous or not - I know some programs prefer to take people who have not yet had the opportunity to work in a lab while there are other programs that tend to take experienced people.

I’m currently a junior at a small liberal arts college and because we don’t have a ton of research labs and because they’re extremely difficult to get into, I haven’t had previous research experience.

I did a similar program (MSU HSHSP) a few years ago and this year I’ve been working in a lab on campus. However I don’t think there was really any place on the app to mention this stuff other than essays so I doubt it’ll be much of an influence at all.

No previous research experience - did those of you who have had research experience work it into your essays?

I worked last summer in a lab at a local major university, and I absolutely found a way to work it in

But on another note, this is starting to get very aggravating…JAX, RPCI, and UF SSTP are all keeping me in the dark here, when the impression I’ve gotten from all is that I should have heard by now

I mentioned it briefly in my career goals essay as it went along with what I was trying to say, however I did not go into too much detail.

Worked in a research lab at Stanford last year. It was quite similar to what the SIMR kids were doing, but I talked to the lead investigator directly instead and wasn’t a part of any program. And I totally found a way to work it in; both of my letters of recommendation were from people within the lab.

Wow! That sounds great! I applied to SIMR this year, but I don’t think I will get in…
Did you have any connections to the PI, or did you just randomly email them?

Yeah, the PI lives down the street from me and I knew him pretty well before I had even considered working in a lab. The kids working in two labs over were both non-SIMR high school interns though that had just randomly emailed their PI and got in. It does happen.

Well, another day of silence on my end…anybody hear anything, positive or negative?

I emailed them today asking if we would hear back if we were rejected or should we not expect anything by a certain date. I will let you know what they say!

Thanks, Random159! I expect we’ll hear by next Monday, in any case, as they clearly said late March (and haven’t edited that date).

Yeah. Agreed. I just sort of wanted to hear something from them which is why I asked! haha

Ah, thanks random…I was too timid to ask at this point myself, but I look forward to hearing what the timeline is for acceptances. According to the one person who says they were accepted, we should have already heard by now, but it seems like the general consensus is no word, except for one person.

Any new acceptances??

Hey Random, did they ever email you back?

Metabolism, Immunology, and Neurobiology

Does anyone know if they only consider you for your three choices OR if you are a good candidate but others were better for those areas, would they consider you for something else?

Any recent acceptances or rejections?

I still haven’t heard back either :(…so anxious
