Jackson Laboratory SSP 2017

i haven’t seen anyone make a thread for this yet. Anyone else out there who’s applied? I’m sooo nervous for results gosh I would really love to attend this program.

I applied too! And yeah I’m also anxious - the research sounds so cool and innovative

@insertcleverpun what three areas did you apply to and did you have a campus preference? My top 3 were Neurobiology, Metabolic, and Genomics and i picked the Bar Harbor campus as my preference

@vivi390 I applied to genomics, cancer (oncology), and immunology, however I added in microbiology as a free choice. I noticed one of the labs was doing microbiome research [which I am really passionate about and would absolutely love to study : ) ], so I shifted my focus towards that. As for oncology, I found their cancer research super interesting and immunology has particularly interesting ties to the microbiome. As for the campus I had no preference. Though I would actually prefer the Bar Harbor area, I would be thrilled to be in any place.

Do you have any idea about who they accepted last year? I’m nervous I don’t have the stats to get in, however I haven’t really seen any other high school alumni profiles.

I too have applied and I agree it would be awesome if accepted. I’m not quite sure which areas I selected but I believe them to be immunology, cancer and asthma. Did anyone receive a confirmation email after submitting their application? I never received one and I’m kind of worried I did something wrong.

I don’t think I actually got a confirmation email…I did receive emails after my recommendors submitted their letters though. After looking at previous years’ threads, I believe that they don’t focus as much on stats or previous experience, but rather on the essays and your passion. From what I’ve seen, it seems like they really like URMs, and that worries me bc I’m not one

What grade are you guys in? I’m a high school junior.

I’m a junior too - and I got a receipt when I submitted my application that stated “This email confirms receipt of your application form to the Summer Student Program at The Jackson Laboratory” - that’s it. Otherwise I got no confirmation.

Has anyone received anything about admissions results yet? I applied too for metabolic research and diabetes.

@Vwitchel nope :frowning: i don’t think we’ll be hearing anything until late March if not April

Has anyone else heard back yet?

I have not received any emails from them yet…according to previous years it looks like we may not hear anything from them until very late March

Did you hear back already? @indian96

I also applied as a high school junior, with no past research experience and have not heard anything back.

Also, did anyone else notice that they changed the long essay to a short answer question? When I began filling out the application it said a 2,500 to 5,000 word essay, but then when I went to submit it said a short answer with a character number limit, so I had to switch to short answer

I just got my email yesterday, I got into the O’connell lab, anyone else hear back yet?

At the Bar Harbor campus

No email yet - oh my gosh I’m so nervous now! I hope having no email is a good thing? Probably not… Anyone else hear back yet?

No response yet prolly got rejected tbh

yikes! no response yet…

@Vwitchel Congratulations!

do they normally accept many high school students at the other campus?

@Vwitchel congrats! I’m sure you’ll have an amazing time!

No response for me either yet…at this point I just want to know, even if i’m rejected…are any of you applying as college students or are we all (who are on this thread) high school students?
