James Madison College

I'm a high school junior considering MSU for JMC. I was wondering what the experience is like in that particular part of the university. I have a few questions:
-I know that I will get into MSU without a problem, but is it more difficult to get into JMC?
-What's the difference between going to JMC than going to the "normal" university?
-If you are/were a JMC student, what was your experience there?
-What are the pros and cons of JMC and MSU in general?
-I've read that there is a JMC honors program separate from the MSU honors college. What is the difference between the two?
Thanks in advance :)

You might want to message fa-la-la-lena. She just graduated from the HC and JMC. Good luck :)

Thank you for the info! I’ll check it out! :)

Hello 2014emily2014! I’m a current JMC student and am also a student ambassador for JMC. JMC and MSU have the same admissions criteria. All you have to do is apply to MSU and indicate James Madison as your “major preference” in that section of your application. However, it is advised that you apply early (by about October) because JMC is a limited enrollment program.

By going to JMC you are part of the “normal” university as well. JMC is just unique because its one of the 3 residential colleges at JMC. This means you’ll have a community atmosphere and you would live in Case Hall in the residential experience your freshman year. You’d still have equal access to the same MSU opportunities and resources that all students have, you would just have access to JMC resources as well.

I’m a junior at JMC currently and I can say I’ve absolutely loved my experience. The program is intensive and challenging, but it’s allowed me to meet some amazing people through courses and student organizations, and I feel that I’ve grown a lot as a person and a student throughout the program. For me I really enjoy the fact that I can have small classes where I get to know my professors and peers, but at the same time I have access to MSU’s incredible study abroad programs and athletic events.

As far as the honors programs, you can do both, one or the other, or none of them. The Honors College is based on your ACT/SAT, class rank & GPA and you are invited to join when you apply to the university. The JMC honors program involves writing a senior honors thesis and is completed during your junior and senior year. I am participating in both the Honors College and the honors program.

I hope this answered some of your questions! For more information I’d suggest “liking” James Madison College Admissions on Facebook. For more student perspectives you can look at the student blogs posted on both the Facebook page and Admissions page of the website. Or if you have more questions and want to post them here I can answer them that way as well! :)

Thank you so much! This really helped me learn more about the program!

I’m so glad I could help! Let me know if you have any other questions or concerns!
