James Madison or MSU school of social science?

Alright, MSU students and alumni, I’m looking for a little advice!

I’ve recently been admitted to MSU (yay), and the James Madison College (JMC) program.

I love politics and international affairs and would love to double major in both. I also would like to minor in pre law. My current aspirations are to get my undergrad at MSU, and try to get into a really good law school. I would also like to be really politically involved when I’m older. Whether it be working for a legislator or working on campaigns. In other words, I would like to put my poli sci degree to use.

My question is. Should I stay in JMC or major in Political science and pre law in MSU’s regular school of social science? My major concerns about being in JMC are:

  • being isolated from the rest of the student body
  • getting a very narrow degree and not being able to use it for anything*
  • the rigorous curriculum

Mostly, the narrow/useless degree aspect.

I think I could handle the work, Ive always been a great student. But I know the top law schools will look at your GPA.

Thoughts?

Anything helps. I’m a nervous senior, but I couldn’t be anymore excited!

Thanks ahead of time.

Hey! Congrats on your admittance! I am still awaiting a decision from MSU. If you don’t mind me asking, exactly when did you get admitted to JMC and what’s your ACT/GPA?

As far as majors go, that is also a worry of mine. I’ve been fortunate in having opportunities to talk to people working on current(and prevelant) presidential candidates about majors. From my vast amount of research, I think you’d be fine with a law degree paired with a poly science undergrad. I’d highly suggest you don’t JUST get a political science undergrad as your assumption would likely be right(hard to find a job). People I have talked to also recommend possibly an Economics degree or something that can both be applicable in politics and the real world. You can get involved in politics with any degree, and while a Law/Politicsl Science/Economics degree may get you a little ahead, even engineers and such have become politicians.

So basically in recap, a political science + law degree would be safe(you could become a lawyer or politician), or if you want to avoid law school, major in something like Economics which is applicable both to politics and business. (Also, I strongly urge you NOT to go to law school unless you WANT to be a lawyer) -Not just for politics.
