James Madison University.. do i have a chance!?

JMU is by far my number one choice, and i really really hope i can get in there. It's definitely a reach for me, but i hope it works out.

My GPA is 2.73 (not high, but i come from a well-known private school in my area)
Applied Regular Decision

SAT: 1200 out of 1600 and 1760 out of 2400

Many extracurricular activities:

Model United Nations Club
Asian Student Union
Intramural sports every year of high school
I volunteer at a homeless shelter every other week
Boosters club
And multiple other clubs and activities throughout high school.

I asked a present JMU student that i am friends with to write me a letter of recommendation, which she did. Also, the headmaster of my school called the admissions office as a certain recommendation type thing.

I don't believe I am missing anything else.

Please tell me what you think my chances are of getting into JMU!?

The biggest criteria you lack is your GPA (which you should need at least a 3.3). Is that weighted or unweighted? According to college board, there’re only 2% of student that have score btwn 2.5-2.99.

Your GPA should be okay for the school so is your EC. About your recommendation, wouldn’t it be a better idea for you to ask your teacher/counselor instead of asking another student, even if he/she is current JMU student.

Write exceptional essay and might want to mention why (if there is a reason) for your low GPA.

Good luck!

Sorry I forgot to mention in my post that in addition to the JMU student writing me a recommendation letter, my school has my college counselor and two teachers write letters too.

Your GPA is certainly the weakest part of your app. I live in Virginia and I know a lot of kids who have gotten into JMU with similar GPAs, but out of state it is harder. If your essays are strong and your ECs are explained well, then you should be fine even with your GPA, especially if your private school is tough with grades.

I believe JMU states on their website that they will only read 1 teacher recommendation and that it must be attached to the transcript.

Thank you, Well hopefully i’ll be able to get in. That’d be amazing.

Any other people??
