@bboop42: Thank you. It was not even close in the decision making. My D told me that she only applied to Tech because of us, but she knew where she was going when she received the EA notification. Now she states that someone from VT waiting list can take her spot.
I have a question - I have been reading that when incoming freshman register for classes they have a hard time getting what they need / want? Does anyone have any feedback / experience in this area.
@mags425 My son is a senior and he did not have issues getting his core / major classes, while not always at the time he wanted. Same for electives. It did require him to stalk the class listing sometimes for an opening once someone else dropped the class. They need to be flexible. This situation is common at many Universities as my son who attended VT has similar “issues”.
Just heard back about Madison Award (MAAE) in an email today. My department is Health and Behavioral Science. What is not clear is the amount of the scholarship. They said the amount for 2018-19 had not been decided yet, but that for 2017-18 it was $10,878 per year for a total of ~$44K. I hope that means we can expect a similar amount for 2018! If anyone has any clarification on what they meant by that please let me know your thoughts.
Did you ever get the full details on the amount you will be given?
@sleepisamyth confused why you were deferred with a 26 ACT?
@collegeboi2023 I imagine part of the deferral was due to having average GPA / ACT stats. Obviously, level of classes, essays, etc. weighs too that we have no basis to judge.
@bboop42 i was trying to say that OP shouldn’t be surprised for getting deferred with a 26. If anything, he should be happy he wasn’t rejected.
I mentioned this on another post, but I will say it again here as I think people will find it helpful:
My daughter is currently a freshman at JMU. She was accepted via early action last year. She had high stats for JMU: 1410 SAT, 4.26 GPA. That is why she got in early.
Only a handful of students from her high school got in early. A huge amount got deferred to regular admission. So many that apparently JMU admissions called her principal to tell him that his students shouldn’t worry. And really, they didn’t have to worry, because many of them ultimately got in via regular admission. Over 60 ended up going to JMU, out of a class of about 430.
Of course, JMU may change the way they do things this year, but I can tell you that last year, only the high stats students got in early. Everyone else got deferred to regular.
If you have stats that match up to JMU’s average stats, don’t freak out if you get deferred. You will likely get in later.
@collegeboi2023 Makes sense. I thought you were surprised.
