<p>Depends on the student, what are your preferences? nearly all of the dorms are despised though; small rooms, poor lighting, thin walls, abitrary rules on stuff like posters.</p>

<p>I know a couple people who go to JMU. I don't know the answer to any of these questions, though, sorry. There's probably a James Madison forum on CC. They say it smells like dog food after it rains because there's a dog food plant nearby. Ew. But they like it anyways! Haha.</p>
<p>JMU has a reputation for being a party school and having really hot girls. Also, apparently it has one of the highest STD rates in the country.</p>
<p>lol, I have seen JMU's campus from I-81 and it looks quite nice, out in the mountains. I don't know any more than that, though.</p>

<p>Well I go to W&M (I'm actually from Massachusetts), and that's what most kids say about it. I've never actually been there.</p>
<p>im a freshman at JMU this year. here’s the low-down on all the dorms:</p>
<p>Village: right in the middle of campus, “suite-style”, aka 2 regular sized dorm rooms & a room for an RA with a shared living space in the middle. i believe the bathrooms are shared with another suite, but dont take my word on it. Dorms are kind of old & its rumored that they’re gonna take them down & build new dorms soon.
Hillside: closer to the quad & the commons, real close to PC Dukes & Top Dog, which are two dining places, as well as Carrier Library. Regular dorms, 2 people per room, a few rooms on a hallway, shared bathroom.
Eagle: Right next to the stadium, as well as Showker, which is the main building for Business, so if you’re a business major, I suggest living here. On game days, the marching band will come at 8am & play the fight song right next to these dorms to wake up everyone.
Bluestone: Right on the quad, normal style halls, 2 people per room, shared bathroom on hallway, etc. Close to main dining hall, D-hall, as well as several other dining places. (Market One, Chik-Fil-A, Lets-Go, etc)
Skyline: This is where I’m at and I LOVE it. Dorms are fairly new, air conditioned & you can control the heat/ac in the rooms. Located at the far end of campus, near ISAT & Festival (which is another place to hang/eat). Bad news is you have to cross across the bridge that goes over 81 every time you want to go to class, but worth it in my opinion. These are one of the only dorms with guarenteed A/C.
Rockingham: AVOID!!! It’s an old motel, located off campus & its a 20 minute walk to the center of campus. I’ve heard its dirty & lonely. My boyfriend lived there last year & he hated it.</p>
<p>Other stuff about general life on campus: the parties are pretty good, when the weather is nice out. Generally you can take the “drunk bus” to the apartment complexes, get off with a crowd & find a random party. Open partying tends to slow down when the weather gets colder though, but there are constantly private parties everyone, just get to know someone with an apartment. Other than that, the food is great on campus, the classes are definitely more challenging than high school ones, but what did you expect? Not sure about frats/sororities, but I know theres lots of them. </p>

<p>Since Springfest 2010 JMU students have lost all rights in the Harrisonburg Courts and the University. I do not support the events that took place during Springfest of 2010, however the punishments that the students have received since the event are to the extreme. Sadly, most of the students who caused the problems at Springfest 2010, have graduated or were not students at JMU.</p>
<p>I do not dispute the fact that a change had to take place, however it has become ridiculous, costly to the student and their families, both financially and academically. In my personal opinion, the students are being “ambushed” by the police ~ students are receiving a summons for drinking, not being drunk, some underage, having no alcohol in their possession ~ approached by the officers, scared, and answering honestly ~ yes I did drink something. That’s it you are done ~ you will receive the summons with or without being breathalyzed.</p>
<p>In addition to being punished by the Harrisonburg Courts and yes the police are always right, the student is then punished by the University. If you were drinking you are then sent on for alcohol treatement and now considered an “alcoholic” by the courts and school.</p>
<p>It is my opinion that the problems caused by Springfest 2010 are really to be dealt with by the police, city of Harrisonburg, and the University ~ not by punishing the students and their families. I am not advocating BREAKING ANY LAWS or out of control parties or anyone being hurt. </p>
<p>I think the police, city, and Universtiy need to come together and solve their issues and let these students get back to their education instead of having them so “scared” to walk out the door. Daytime is a wonderful experience at JMU ~ night time and weekends are FRIGHTENING! Like in all of these situations…the wrong people are being caught and accused and the people who should be are getting away with breaking the rules.</p>
<p>You won’t fill your beautiful new stadium treating people, even parents, like criminals. It is a sad state of afffairs at James Madison ~ my heart is broken as the parent of alumni and a current student…finding it very hard to deal with this ~ seeing too many nice families hurt and good students punished. I think the court and university have become numb to the process they have put in to place and everyone is being treated as a number, actually worse…everyone is a criminal and guilty. You cannot defend yourself with or without an attorney. Very sad over the unfairness of this system. </p>
<p>Yes, one has the right to transfer, but it is not easy for a young person to start over during such an important time in their life.</p>

Its all a matter of preference, Bluestones where its at. I’m in the treehouses…it’s okay, just out of the way.

It’s not a frat its a fraternity…and i’m pledging Lambda Chi so i’m clearly biased.

There’s something everyday, but thursday-saturday it’s really bumping.
4) What the general life is like
Solid, everybodys really outgoing. If youre not, learn to be.
Also, involve yourself in the community. I’m pledging a fraternity and on the rugby team, and it’s definately helped me…alot.

Incredibly, I feel like a kid in a candy shop. However, we have a good bit of the jersey better than thou types…so you gotta be careful.
6) How long you generally study
More than my engineering roommate, because of Russian (I was international affairs)…however I just dropped Russian and switched to Athletic Training so we’ll see.</p>

<p>Unfortunately, everything that Chloe3 writes is true. My 20yr old D goes to JMU and has received 2 strikes (3 and they ask you to take a semester off) for very minor events with hefty punishments and large fines. In the first, she was in a room with empties. In the second, she was holding a beer (unopened) and had not drank a sip that night. She now has a criminal charge on her record, attends alcohol education classes, $500 lawyer fee, $500 fine, 50 hours community service, 6 months probation and no ability to work off her strikes. Quite extensive punishment for holding a beer can and having a 00.0% alcohol level. My S goes to Gettysburg College and they deal with alcohol related incidents in a much fairer way. He was caught with 4 cases of beer in his dorm room freshman year. You receive disciplinary points this, he received 4. If you get too many points, you are asked to take a semester off. However…if you attend alcohol classes, do community service, etc. you can work off your points. And if you don’t get in trouble for a semester, you can work off more points. A much more reasonable solution. My daughter loves everything else about JMU, but dealing with the legal system of the school and county had been a horrible experience. She is scared and stressed and I am much poorer. If there are any other parents that would like to approach school about this, let me know.</p>
