Anyone else on here go/going to James Madison? I got waitlisted by my 1st choice (U of M) so it's James Madison at State for me. I've heard that the courseload is pretty dry (a bunch of people from my H.S. dropped out of JM and transferred into the regular program or other schools because they hated it so much), and I was wondering if anybody has any input. I'd rather switch out now than wait until I'm failing half my classes...

Oh yeah - I chose James Madison because I'm planning on double-majoring in IR and Journalism, so it's not like I applied there because it "looks better" or anything. However, I'm not so excited about the required Econ. classes...

I am not in JMC, but I do have a few friends who are in it and they agreed that it is very difficult. One of my friends is also considering dropping out (she was also waitlisted from UofM). However, JMC is one of the best residential colleges for people going into law school..etc. I know that there are smaller classes, you can easily contact your professors and you live in Case Hall (your classes are in that hall also). My friend also told me that it looks better, but it doesn't make much of a difference. She said that if she wasn't in it (she's prelaw) and was taking regular classes (poli sci..etc.) she would have a higher GPA right now.

This is pretty much what I know about JMC, and Quincy will probably know more about this than me, so if he's here, hopefully he can answer your question. I know my answer isn't the best, but I'm the only current MSU student that is on the MSU forum. :(

I'm just telling you what my friends have told me about it, so don't quote me on anything I stated.

I was thinking of applying James Madison for IR but eventually decided not to. At the Inside MSU program one of the speakers was talking about it...mostly just general information. He too went on to talk about the large number of people that drop out of it.

But on the same note, they profiled a girl who was a student there and is doing really great things. I believe she was 20 or so and had just gotten an internship at the World Bank. Basically they made it seem like if you're really up for the challenge it's a great path to choose.

That's all I really know...sorry!

smurfgirl pretty much nailed it. JMC's pretty competitive and focuses a lot of writing, including essay exams, instead of multiple choice types. It's also a very political environment; political talk usually extends to the dinner table and the Barista coffee shop right in the Case residence hall/classroom building. Besides prelaw, it's international relations program is also quite good. One college book coined a student calling JMC “Ivy League, with Big 10 sports.” Despite less than 1.5% of the undergrad population, overall, Madison produces something like 35% of MSU’s Phi Beta Kappas... not a place for slackers.

what were your grades/act scores/extracurriculars like ? and what do you think the averages, estimated , are for gpa and act scores for james madison?

Stats:
ACT - 32
GPA - 3.8
EC's - president of French Club, martial arts (first degree black belt in taekwondo), avant-garde film club, model un, lacrosse team, piano lessons, played in local band...

I have no idea what the average GPA's and test scores are for entrance into James Madison, but I know people that got in with 3.5's and 25-28's on their ACT.

I've decided against going to James Madison, because my heart's not set on politics so I think I'd be making a mistake. Even though Michigan State is a great school, I'll be attending Eastern in the fall because (among other things) I plan to transfer to U of M anyway and Eastern is a more cost-effective way to do it.

umm yeah smurfgirl and others, it's JMU, NOT JMC.

FilmGrad, I think you're wrong. Judasmoncoeur said "...it's James Madison at State" -- that's pretty clear. Also, this is an MSU thread.
