James Scholar Program for Engineering

I just got the letter today. Is it anything to be excited about? What percentage of applicants are invited?

You're in if you have a 33 ACT, 1450 SAT (math + verbal), or a top 1% high school class rank, which is the roughly the top 25% of incoming students. After that, you need a 3.3 GPA (3.5 for ECE) to stay in the program. The biggest perk is priority registration, so you pretty much get to choose any schedule you want without fighting for class spots.

3.5 for ece? why? Is it so easy that it needs to be made 3.5? Will 1430 M+V do? :P

Does anyone know when the Campus Honors Program decisions are made and/or announced?

i'm a James Scholar too!!!

I was kind of wondering that too...why a higher GPA requirement for ECE students?

I'm in too.. is this a big achievement or does it happen to a lotta folks?

Sometimes if you're in a top major it can seem like everybody has James Scholar. Because it is the top 15% of the college (doesn't sound like so much now!) and ChemE is in LAS but held to engineering standards many of those that get in will be in the top 15% of the college. So it seems like everyone in my major has it and also a lot of chemE's (because the top few percent are asked to apply to CHP/Chancellor's Scholar) have the CHP as well (I think 5 out of my chem course, maybe more) which is a lot for CHP just letting 125 kids in.

So yes because of the registration mainly (you will be thanking your lucky stars you got the early reg) it is a big deal. At least for me. You'll get a ridiculous amount of emails from Penny Soskins so get ready for that.

Haha, anyone who puts ECE and easy in the same sentence is in for a surprise when they start taking classes. I don't know why ECE has a higher GPA cutoff. My guess is that ECE students do better in non-ECE classes like math, physics, etc., so their top 25% is higher than other majors. The SAT cutoff is a strict 1450, so I don't think 1430 qualifies.

I got a 33 on my ACT but I have yet to hear about the James Scholar Program (major: CS). Is there any chance that I could still get into the program?

You should automatically qualify with a 33 ACT. From the web site: "The program will be discussed and admission applications accepted for incoming freshmen during the summer orientation program."
