Jan SAT vs. Admission process

This is the situation: since Harvard accepts January SAT, i want to give it a try. However, their app deadline is Jan 1, which means that if i officially "complete" my app by the Jan SAT (23 i think), my app will be one of the last ones in the pile!
and here comes my questions to the knowledgeable CC community:
1/ will my late app harm my chances of admission?
2/ anybody knows about the reviewing process? can it happen that they will accept enough students until they get to my app and then i'll receive the obvious decision...?
3/anybody knows someone who has been accepted to Harvard and took the Jan SAT?
i am also aware of the fact that the adcom will be exhausted by the college app and essays by the time they got to mine => less chance to be outstanding...
i appreciate any suggestion.
Tausend dank !!! >...<

I am also curious about this question. Anyone?

Your application will not be inconsiderately evaluated and will receive attention equal to those of students who fulfilled testing requirements at an earlier date. I completed three SAT Subject Tests in January and did not submit the totality of my standardized testing record until February. (I am a current student.)

It is advisable to indicate your intention of a January sitting on your application* or in a follow-up email if your application has already been submitted.

Either in the “Additional Information” section and/or on the standardized testing page (by selecting the type of test and date of the future sitting while disregarding the score box)

^how many SAT subject tests had you taken before the Jan date ? could your application be considered complete as far as standardized tests are concerned by jan, 1 ?
I suspect the 3 subject tests you took in januray were “extra” tests on top of the 2 (or was it 3 back then ?) required

I had completed three (the number required for students to the class of 2014) by that point but I had not submitted a single SAT Subject Test score until February.

Did you list your subject tests and scores in the common app forms when you submitted the application ?

I had two scores with which I was content, so yes, I did list those (although validation in the form of actual score reports did not arrive until later). I had enumerated the ones I was to take in January since I had scheduled the sitting at the time of submission. The basic point is that the target dates for test score submissions are separate from the general application deadline (though ideally not submitted too belatedly). Moreover, it can be ensured that no subliminal consequences will be incurred for a February score submission. Hence, there would be little need to agonize over this detail.

The Harvard College Board page asserts that the SAT Reasoning/ACT score report must be acquired by March 6. The SAT Subject Test report must be obtained by February 23. Score Choice is permitted.

What if I have already taken the SAT, but still would like to try ACT in December? If I do well in ACT, most likely I won’t be submitting SAT scores. However, I won’t be able to acquire the writing score for ACT by the deadline (Jan. 1st). What should I do on the common app? Should I list both my ACT test date and my current SAT scores? If I do better at ACT than at SAT when the score of the former is converted to the SAT scale, will the college consider my ACT score exclusively?

Thanks Mifune. i feel way better ^^. btw, i want to clarify: i can submit my app now, and then “update” later? this is an example but if i happen to win the Nobel prize (:P) or the like on March, can i “update” that too?
The definition for “completion of the app” is too confusing. If i already have 3 SAT subject tests and SAT test scores and submit them, will i be considered “completed” even if i still am going to take the Jan SAT?

And this is not related to the SAT but i’m very very very grateful if you can give me an advice on as well. i have read on the decision thread and some people said that they submitted 3 recommendations from teachers and from non-academic people as well. can i do that and how?

***Thanks again Mifune. You are so very kind ^^.

Yes to the former. As for the latter portion of the question, you do not necessarily need to list your SAT scores. It’s permissible to leave it clear since self-reported scores are not considered. But listing the ACT date should indicate your intention to take it at the December date.

I’m fairly certain that the comparatively higher of the two will be evaluated. However, if students who submit both tests are admitted, each score will be entered into the common data set by virtue of their submission. Of course, if one is more favorable score-wise, it’s always preferable to submit that test exclusively.

Yes, if you earn awards and other such recognition, then notifications may be submitted. For Harvard, the relevant email address to send updates is fileroom@fas.harvard.edu. In such cases, write “Application Update” in the subject line. Faxes are also permitted (617-496-3229).

Yes, that would entirely fulfill the testing requirement. (Also, remember that you are only obligated to submit two Subject Tests due to the policy change.) But I wouldn’t feel pressured to submit the prior scores by either the December or January 1 deadline. I’d transmit the Subject Tests, but postpone submission of the SAT Reasoning Test until after obtaining your January score results in February.

Yes, you may submit recommendations (preferably limited to one) beyond those provided by your two instructors and guidance counselor. It would be best for the supplementary recommender to send the reference via the postal system. And it’s always courteous to present stamped and addressed envelopes to the Office of Admissions. (Harvard’s address is: 86 Brattle Street / Cambridge, MA 02138)

Thanks, mifune.

What if I eventually choose to submit SAT scores instead? Will it be problamatic if I write the date for the ACT test and leave all the SAT score boxes (dates and the scores for each section) blank?

THANK YOU MIFUNE!!! you make my day-month actually <3. i am so lucky to find out about this website and get help from nice people like you ^^.
Thanks again.

That wouldn’t hold any consequence (no assumptions of “concealment” and so forth). Harvard is purely interested in your optimum scores.

Note: This would also apply to a non-Score Choice institution like Yale, which only mandates the submission of all scores from one or the other.

The Jan SAT score would be out by late Feb! Roughly a month before decision day…I’m surprised that that is OK.

Also Mifune, if I take the Jan SAT, should I not fill in my Nov. SAT scores? Should I still have the dates listed on the common app? Also, if I send my Nov. scores to schools via collegeboards free reports…will that have any impact?

Thanks!

And while I’m at it…how come I cannot find my 4 free reports on the CB website?
“score recipents: 0”
“send additional score reports”
What happened to the free ones? Did I miss them or something?

I apologize for not answering your question sooner.

There’s no need to self-report scores if you desire not to. The official score reports are solely considered. You don’t necessarily need to have the dates listed either, although recording the future January 2011 sitting may illuminate your intention.

If I were in your situation, I would send them to non-Score Choice universities rather than those that do accept the policy.

I would like to seek some clarification…I can self-report my subject test scores on the app for now and not send an official report. Later when I get my January reasoning scores, I can send ALL the scores (reasoning and subject). That’s okay, right?
