At what point should one follow up on materials that are not marked as received by the schools. I was thinking Jan. 31. Is this too late? Some things are just strange, like marking that they have transcripts but not counselor form when I know they were sent in the same envelope.

Do you think waiting until the end of the month is too long?

The postmark deadline for most boarding schools is January 15, i.e., tomorrow. As of yesterday, there were a number of items not yet shown as received by the schools to which our son is applying. We chose to send a short note yesterday to each of those individuals asking them to please let us know when they send their materials. All quickly replied that they’d already mailed their materials. I would guess that the boarding schools are so buried in applicant material at this point that they may be few days behind in posting notice of everything they’ve received. All of that being said, however, I do think that waiting until the end of the month might be a mistake. No harm in a friendly question right now to your recommendation sources whose materials have not yet been shown as received.

Send your applications in by mail with a delievery confirmation service. That way you know exactly when the schools receive them. Give them a week to 10 days to enter the data before asking questions by email.

It’s a teacher’s rec that is missing so I had my son email her, thanking her again for doing it. That way, if it hasn’t been done, she will have been reminded without being reminded.

A couple of schools - Groton & Deerfield I believe - even state on their website how inundated they are with mail at this time of year. They go on to ask applicants and their families to NOT contact the admissions office prior to 2/1 as they sort through the mail and get things placed in appropriate folders.
