~January 2009 SAT I Results Thread~

^^^
80 is the best you can do on the MC section of the Writing section.

With the sheer amount of supposed “2200+” scores on this website seems a little shocking to me. 2200+ is probably within the 98th percentile of all test takers. I guess that everyone who did well would post their scores, supposedly trying to show disappointment, but in reality just showing off, while the rest of us hide behind closed doors wondering how to break that 2200 barrier.

Anyway here’s what I got:
690 CR
790 MA
690 WR (really shocking because I got a 7 on my essay when on the last test I scored a 10)
Total: 2170

Better than expected on math, but lower than expected on writing. I scored 73 on the multiple choice, but unfortunately something went wrong with my essay (funny, I actually came out thinking that I wrote better than last time). My combined score from two tests is 700 CR, 790 MA, and 710 WR for a even 2200.

what will colleges think if say i get a 1990 this time but a 2100+ on my second try

For everyone who did not get the score they wanted, I hope you do better next time :]

Personally, I’m extremely happy with my score.

Critical Reading 740
Math 790
Writing 800
Multiple Choice 76
Essay 12

Total: 2330

This means you can get 800 on writing with 4 wrong and a 12 :0

What the hell is up with people complaining about 2000+ scores… I got an 1800 and I’m quite happy.

Listen up, getting a 2200 instead of a 2300 will not kill your chances at college. Get a life and stop obsessing over test scores.

Best thing I’ve ever heard said about CC and test scores.

Me personally, I would have loved those ten more points to hit 2300 (enough to have their babies ;)). But I can live and be happy with a 2290 - I just have to keep telling myself that :)

Yes, it’s ten points. But never underestimate the impact of that 22-- vs 23–.

And people with “lower” scores, always remember that us perfectionists are never happy no matter what we achieve. Savor your accomplishments - and don’t judge us.

So I got my scores this morning, and although I was very happy I am unsure about whether or not to take them again.

I got a 790 on math (expected; little higher than usual)
I got a 710 on verbal (better than expected; usually 600-650 on practice tests
I got a 670 on writing (lower than expected; usually low 700’s)
-11/12 essay (always get a 10-12)
-61/80 mc (LOW)
COMPOSITE: 2170

Should I take them again to try and spill over into 2200? The only thing I am worried about is going down a little in match and going down a lot and verbal and have it look bad on my application, especially the verbal.

I plan on applying to Harvard (brother goes their), Dartmouth, UChicago, Columbia, Gtown, Duke, BC, Tufts, Nova, GWU.

Unweighted GPA: 3.8/4.5
Several AP’s… EXTREMELY strong resume, expecting great recs, I interview well.

Advice?

bump

ps - my weighted GPA will be around a 4.2/4.5 or higher I take all honors/advanced/or AP.

I think you’ll at least feel “safer” if you take it again-that is, if you don’t mind practicing a bunch.

Hey Jack, you did awesome at math… I got about the same total score as you (20 points less, poor me) but I did good at verbal, but SO bad at math. If I were you, I’d retake it, you can study up for writing & probably improve your CR too. CR is the easiest to study for, do Collegeboard practice tests and get used to the style of questions. Particularly since you take AP classes, SAT CR is SO different from AP questions you probably overanalyzed the questions.

If you could answer a question for me… how do you do so good on math? I got a 5 on AP Calc BC last year as a Sophomore, so I thought I was good at math, but then SAT comes along and I can’t even break 700! What’s the trick (if there is one)?

It’s funny because I’m a junior this year in Advanced PreCalculus Honors, I’m not even taking AP until my senior year but I do so well. The most valuable thing I learned is to TAKE YOUR TIME. It’s not worth rushing through the first 10 or so to try and get to the harder ones so you have more time because they are in fact all worth the same. Make sure you get the first 15 right or at least the first 10. Don’t rush, everyone hates stupid mistakes. And as for the last couple, I have a really abstract way of solving problems I have no idea how to do the real way, but I’d recommend taking practice tests and familiarizing yourself with all the different types of problems and answers. Sorry if that doesn’t help.

I promised my friends for free meals at McDonald’s if I got 2300+, but I failed them.

CR: 690 (+30)
M: 790 (+10)
W: 720 (+40, E:10)
Total: 2200

Oct SAT: 2120
PSAT: 2220

Drastic improvement is very difficult, and that the 80 points are only result of chance and experience. I’m considering to retake it for the third and final time this June, but the prospect of a subpar performance seems intimidating. Does anyone have some suggestions?

Actually I think it does… I do tend to rush through problems… maybe slowing down would help? though it seems counter intuitive somehow. eeee well I’ll see in March :frowning: thanks!

First try.

CR: 800
M: 680
WR: 760
= 2240

Unsure as to whether to retake to up my math score. I didn’t prep, so I figure if I practice the math a little I could get over 700 at least. Also I’m pretty sure with a little luck I could hit 800 WR, but I certainly wouldn’t retake just for that reason. Think my math score is reason enough to take the May SAT?

Critical Reading 600
Math 790
Writing 670
Essay 12

I’m not happy with my writing since I got 660 last time with a 10 essay and i could have broken 700 easily. -.-

Oh well, it’s still higher and a 2060 is good for me. Thank god I broke 600 for cr. I hate cr so much!

Oh, btw, I’m leaving for France the day after the March SAT, so there’s no way I’m taking it then, haha.

Also, this is a thread to post scores for the January SAT. Should we prohibit scores above 2200 from posting? Because my reason for posting was that I can’t decide whether to retake the exam, and I thought that was reason enough. I don’t mean to be cranky, and I do know where you’re coming from, but I’d like advice just as much as you all would. And my math score was below 700, so there! haha jk

99th+

10 char

^^ Really? hm.

2140=98th percentile
2200=99th percentile
2300=99th+ percentile
2400=99.98 percentile
