January 2010 Math thread

silverturtle Yes that was the largest one. The one where both hyp crossed the center.

prime number - why couldnt it be 3 and 7? they have 4 difference and both are prime

The question said that there can’t be an intervening prime, and 5 is prime.

was the one with f(x)=f(x+8) experimental?

^I don’t remember that question…

For x/y with 3 different integers, I ran out of time to simplify it (bubbled it in right as time ended). -.-

I’m guessing 6/54 counts as incorrect?

heavenliescent ,I think so because I do not remember seeing that.

Shoot…I can’t remember if I put 15/2 or 2/15 for the hose pump one…I wasn’t really paying attention to which way the ratio was supposed to go.

For the path through F, I swear I only got 3 paths, and I double checked too…maybe I read the arrows wrong or something?

What do you predict the score for -1 and -2 to be? The only reason I’m retook this was because I made 2 stupid mistakes on the dec sat math section…I’m mad that I probably made stupid mistakes on this one too =P

@ winterwings
were u allowed to put a decimal for that one? I put 7.5
:P

@awesomemath
You are allowed to put 7.5

For the one with the answer 1/9, what did it ask again? I may have read it wrong, but didn’t it say that x= sum of 3 integers less than 10, and y= sum of three integers less than 20. So x could equal 1, 2, and 3. y could also equal 1, 2, 3. so x/y=1? that’s what i put. I know it’s wrong after reading 1/9 like a million time, but could someone explain it for me?

@katemorganne

It asked for the least value that x/y could be.
Therefore, y has to equal 17+18+19 and x has to equal 1+2+3. The answer will then be 1/9.

Oh shucks. well it was a grid in, so I won’t be too upset over it.

what was the question with the ban and orchestra members with the system of equations?

yeah thats right 07 does anybody remember the question i asked?

@ giants
i got 72

yeah but do you remember what the question was I can’t seem to remember it

yo i think i put 8 for the pqrs problem but does anybody remember the exact question. and giant wat problem was it the band members one?

what was that circle right triangle question?

a circle with two right triangles asking for which one had the greatest area?

winter wings “For the path through F, I swear I only got 3 paths, and I double checked too…maybe I read the arrows wrong or something?”

There was another way if you went down, back up, back down. It took me a while to find it, but it was definitely four.

Does anyone know the answer for the one that was like
If x < y
x - l y l must be positive, negative, etc. I must not be remembering it completely accurately, but it was something like that.

I just remember that band = 72 students
