January 23 SAT Discussion Thread

I thought you couldn’t discuss questions. Hope you guys don’t get in trouble somehow.

Silverturtle,

For the “had swum” question, there was a modifier misplacement.

They had “Although…, but.”

Don’t you think placing the “but” after “although” has been mentioned sounds kind of redundant?

“Although…, but” is incorrect coordination, but I don’t remember seeing that in there. “had swam” is definitely wrong.

treeloop embargo was lifted.

and silverturtle is correct… had swam is wrong. it has to be had swum.

I chose faster traveling. They’re pretty much stating that they want to avoid staying in a motel. That’s not really reading into it too much if they directly state “avoid staying in a motel”. Another thing is that, it dropped little hints saying they wanted to reach New York quickly. God, I got 4 math sections and they were a b****. Math DID seem harder this year!

By the way, for the problem talking about Sappho in the last writing section, second to last problem, was the answer “has so profoundly influenced” or just “so profoundly influenced”?

I got diffident… thought arrogant was too extreme.

I also chose “faster travel”. In fact, I engaged in a several page-long debate in the CR thread with other members on this forum to discuss why I chose the answer I did. I don’t want to bother arguing anymore, but I’ll just say that I STILL have doubts about the “inexpensive motels” answer. :)

@blueyfooey: ‘Diffident’ means ‘shy’.

Just “so profoundly influenced.”

I chose diffident because it also meant reserved. Those no-emotion answers usually end up correct so I decided to guess diffident. Didn’t know it also meant shy. I probably got that one wrong then.

Yeah, I also still have doubts about the answer “inexpensive motels”.

Everyone so far has been telling me that it works because it directly fits in with the theme of saving money. But even after all this time, no one’s been able to answer my biggest question regarding that answer: how would the father have considered it a reason if he wasn’t considering it at all? The passage DID describe the three things as “reasons for choosing the back roads”, and to me it still seems that if you chose the “inexpensive motels” answer, you’d have to take it completely out of context… but I’ll just trust these guys for now and assume I was wrong. 10 points off on CR isn’t a huge deal anyways :D
